Royston Drenthe

I know we aren't Man City, but against Arsenal on Sunday they were winning and Arsenal were beginning to turn the scew a little. You wouldn't have blamed them for bringing men back for set-pieces, but City left TWO up front all the time.

Sometimes having too many men back can lead to confusion and indecision. Buck passing. Diffusion of 'responsibility'. And so on. Also, when you hoof it up, the ball goes straight back to them and it begins again.

Turning every player into a work horse is counter-productive.

I would rather Royston conserve his energy into running full pelt at the opposition when the need arose than wearing himself out tracking back.

Moyes is doing my head in at the moment. Some of the stuff he's been coming out with this season beggars belief.

It really does beggar belief. Maybe if he goes to Atletico we can swap Turan and Falcao for Cahill and Saha. He won't want them scoring too many goals.

MoyLeZ said:
"I thought Roy did quite well tonight," continued Moyes. "There was some great play and there were some bits which were not quite so great.

"I think when you have a player like Roy you have to accept that.

I think he did really well and did give a decent defensive effort. He did fail a couple of times to beat his man, but surely it's better to lose the ball while trying to create something instead of losing it midfield with sloppy passes or losing it via hoofing.
Or maybe MoyLeZ just thinks such comments the right approach with Drenthe to keep him focused.

He is a free agent at the end of the season right? I wonder what it would take to keep him at the club? 75k a week plus signing on bonus?

It's so rare to find a winger with both offensive and defensive quality. I think we should be glad that he can be such a threat going forward rather than lamenting on his defensive failure. He's capable of doing things that no other in our team is capable of so why not just let him do his stuff. As a manager, Moyes must find ways to accommodate his defensive aspect, not ask him to track back at every opportunity when the opposition posses the ball.

Drenthe is pivotal if we are going to adopt a more effective higher tempo game or counter attacking game.

He had a wonderful first half last night, mainly because Swansea only put one defender on him. He can easily beat any defender in a one on one situation creating space for himself to shoot or run towards the byeline and produce a low drag back cross which almost result in goals either way.

The second half is a different story. He was double team constantly, at one point there were 4 defenders trying to crowd him out in the box. That made me chuckle. When was the last time we saw an everton player having so much attention from opposing defenders? They are simply afraid of Drenthe.

We need to learn how to evolve our play so that he won't be nullified as a threat when teams double up on him. More players need to offer him good passing options and always have a target man in the box to anticipate his unpredictable lighting crosses. In short, build a team around him like how ManU did with ronaldo. Fergie allow ronaldo to flourish because he allow him to neglect his defensive duties and concentrate only on causing mayhem at the opposing end.

I think everyone saying that he doesnt defend at all needs to watch the lad properly! OK sometimes he doesnt work as hard to track back as a more 'defensive-minded winger' would, but there was a point in the game last night when he raced back to help Bainesy out and threw in a perfect sliding challenge on his own byline and came away with the ball. I actually think he has something to offer defensively, just because of his sheer pace. I know he's not the most physical and can be a bit like a bull in a china shop sometimes when hes charging round into people at full pelt, but I dont think its fair to say he ONLY offers us attacking qualities

dont know but hes on about 35 a week now and good post mate thats exactly what we need to do with him

£35k a week? FFS I've been assuming we would never be able to match his wage demands. I'll absolutely fume if we don't sign him up now. He's the most exciting player I've seen pull on our shirt for ages.

no we should be able to give him whatever he wants really, the only way we aint signing him is if another team comes in for him, but hopefully we sign a pre contract with him because hes out of contract in the summer (if you didnt know)
