That Atalanta game was never seriously seen as anything other than one we had to play and get out the way.

The team picked that night did not reflect that.

It could and should have been treated as a confidence booster, not as happenned a roll over and die performance.

10 points in 4 games. Good going considering what went before. But apart from the Apollon game (which was played by a scratch team anyway) he had no two games per week to contend with and unlike Unsworth he was made FT manager and that has to affect the way a group of players puts the effort in.

If the players had anything about them they would have performed for Rhino.

They know him from the club, they know the way he works.

The simple fact is we looked lost and confused with the tactics that Rhino brought with him from the U23's.

At the time, with us scrapping around the bottom 3/4/5 and shipping goals every game. it would have been suicide to give him the role permanently.

Rhino's time will come, but he needs to go away to a lower league side and learn his trade there because the U23's are a world away from the premier league.

4 games. He wasn't in charge against West Ham.
Who's to say he didn't have any input though?

Unsworth himself said he had spoken to Sam before the game so how do we know who's idea it was to play Rooney in a deeper role when Rooney hadn't been on the pitch at all in the previous PL games.

Maybe Unsworth was all out of ideas and had nothing to lose or took the suggestion from Sam to do it? We will never know.

Knowing there was a permanent boss sitting in the stands ready to take over must have had an impact on the players rather than knowing one of the lads are the picking the team.

There hadn't been before that Wednesday night.

The reason they put in a performance was because they all knew Sam was their new boss and he was sat in the directors box watching.

Whether he spoke to them or not, knowing your new gaffer is watching you, will make you but more effort in.

Its called trying to impress.
Was he in the stands to inspire the fightback and win against Watford?

All we do know is that Allardyce himself said that he had nothing to do with the planning of the game or the line up, and that was underlined at the time by Unsworth.

Problem was he was and still is one of the lads. I can imagine it being very difficult to make that change for anyone never mind the mess we were in. As you said going out and earning his stripes is the best for him now.

If Unsworth had turned it around and was so good, they'd have given him the job. End of discussion.
If he'd been given the job FT the performances would have been improved and the results would have come.

These players wont respect a part timer. They dont even respect full timers if they stay longer than a season.

So you believe that the supposed 15 minute meeting they had didn't include anything regarding the upcoming game? I'd be amazed if that was the case. I'm not saying Sam picked the team but Unsworth could have taken some of his ideas on board before picking the team. As I said we will never know.

They could have just been discussing the general state of the club and what Unsworth's assessment was of who was and wasn't pulling their weight. All we can do is accept what each said post match.
