Hard to know where we go from here...glass half empty
.and with only watered down Carling lager in it.
I will start by saying I get it. I was there when Murray racked up £76m of debt, through the birth of the RST, through Moonbeams selling for £1, to the hedge at Brechin. We have a club, and that is all that matters. I know this is much better than that.
However, there is a feeling growing in me that we've levelled out. The board don't want (from what I heard) or cannot secure (from other rumours on here) funding from outwith their own collective. So we are roughly 1/3 of turnover and wages compared to the Filth, and also have less cash to spend on transfer fees. This WILL continue. A celtic fan I know - in between gloating - reminded me last night that next summer they sell Eduard if they don't make CL. So they will still have more money to spend. We are looking for weird and wonderful scouting destinations (Osijek), players we're given through contacts (Alfie), or loaness and/or free transfers, or SPL players we hope might step up. One big signing in three years was Helander and he doesn't play. This won't close the gap. Deep down, for all the flaming I will receive, we all know this is true. The quality isn't there in those markets and we rely on luck...like every signing being a Morelos. None have been apart from Morelos!
We also have a team of guys who have won nothing and it DOES show. Almost every 'crunch' game we lose. That's not coincidence. No one is a leader really...not on the pitch. Why would they be? They have never had expectations until arriving here. They have nothing to dig into, to go deep with, as they're not those types of players.
I also worry about the kids...the best bit of the 'journey' (I know, I know) was so many kids (including my own) discovering Ibrox and Rangers. Each home game there are loads now, but...defiance, hope, and parents promises can only last so long. Kids in High School now will have never seen us win anything, or even be good. There is NO glamour, glory or ability to glory hunt. This matters more to kids than it ever did to us. Will they retain interest?
In essence I never see a poor bookie, and the odds are better of the tims winning treble again than any other team even winning a cup...and I can't argue. What CAN we do to bump the odds? To make inroads in the gap? Is it just a case of waiting for youth system to produce some starlets? Sell Alfie and Tav and spend that on fresh blood?
I didn't and don't share the "this season it's 55" feeling but how can we make it a reasonable target?
