I remember when Walter came down here and he said Liverpool was like Glasgow as a City and I do see that. It's a real goldfish bowl, and has a kind of unique parochialism (not like the little Englander thing) but that the matches that surround the teams in that city take on enormous significance that is just not replicated elsewhere. As you say you either thrive in that environment, or it destroys you. To be fair to both clubs, they've both had managers where both of the above was true. Rangers went through quite a few managers who were probably very decent, but just not the right cultural fit.

From the outside if looks like complacency has set in a bit at an organisational level at Celtic. It took Gerrard what 2-3 years to win his 1st trophy, and the immediacy of expecting to win every trophy, every season has become normalised but it can't last forever. He probably needs this season to get used to the league and systems. It's not like he's been given loads of money either is it? Whether he gets that time, I don't know.

Rangers are big favourites but the league is a long way from a foregone conclusion IMO. In general Celtics record against Rangers has been very good recently, and they could easily win 3-4 old firm games this season as they have in others. He just need to get started.

TRIFC headhunted a man who had done well at Southampton as their director of football role, while Celtic appointed a guy from rugby union as their director of football! The newco's guy will have contacts in football all around the globe to call on about players. What football contacts will a rugby guy have?

In my opinion, the Celtic board make their decisions based on finance, while the newco make their decisions based more on the football side of things. The chickens have come home to roost now for Celtic, after a period in which Rangers were liquidated, and the newco worked its way up the leagues for a few years.

Although thats true there has to be a little realism too, the SPFL is such a poor standard and the size of club and spending advantage relative to the majority of the rest of the league so great that winning should be a formality.

You've heard of big fish in a small pond but for the majority of the last ten years that's exactly what it's been for Celtic. Their performance (or lack of) in Europe shows just how small a pond it has been.
I wish there was a St Johnstone supporter here to bang the drum, for such a diddy team to come away with the 2 cups on offer up here far outweighed any other achievement by the supposed bigger clubs last year by a long chalk.

Don't go.
Just put the old firm numptys on ignore, then join in the discussion. We need more people to drown out the sectarianism and whataboutery and help make this thread about actual football

Which team in Scotland do you follow?
Thank you WA but I can’t be done with the nonsense and it does seem to get dominated by the old firm. Maybe they could have one of their own ?, god help us.
I would really like to continue on the Scottish football thread though.
One of the things I’d like to do one day is get a camper van and go on a tour of the highland league. That would be great.

My old man was a life long Hearts supporter. Lucky enough to see Alex Young in a maroon jersey. His favourite all time player though was Dave Mackay.
In the past I’ve seen Queens Park home and away and had a few visits to Annan. Great wee clubhouse.
When Lesser Hampden is finished and QPFC are there I’m planning to make a trip back north.
I managed to see them at Hampden before they left and I was treated brilliantly.

Celtic aren't even hiding the fact they won't/can't match their local rivals.

Hearts are a disgusting club and very definitey part of the axis of evil. I remember reading a book about the early game in Edinburgh and how they did all they could to deny Hibernian space to operate and survive on sectarian grounds.

Utter 'kin rotters.
That is one of the most ill-informed comments I’ve ever read on a forum.

Hearts actually got in trouble because they insisted on the right to play Hibs, even though at the time, Hibs weren’t recognised by the SFA as being a Scottish team. Hearts were very seen as an ally to Hibs over this matter.

Brian, Scotland is a very sectarian country. Unfortunately, it goes with the territory.

Things are a lot better nowadays than they used to be, when the Irish diaspora were blatantly denied opportunities because of their religion, but if you scratch the surface of a lot of people in Scotland, anti-Irish, and anti-Catholic, bile will seep out.
Aye, we've a proud tradition o' hatred up here right enough. Religion, politics, football are subjects best steered clear of - even at weddings and funerals!

This is poor history. I'll dig out the info later and put it on here. But Hibs were frozen out (and violently kept out on occasion) by football teams and their fans and the Edinburgh football establishment - INCLUDING Hearts.

Always supported Stenhousemuir of the smaller clubs, but they'll always be down in the basement divisions of Scotland. Always amazes me when they actually win a game, any game against anyone too.
