2021/22 Seamus Coleman

I don't think so, I think he's just been bang average for a couple of seasons now, and through no fault of his own the club hasn't acted to get him a viable replacement or backup.
Just looking back a couple of pages, comments were:

Scared to tackle.
Arse fell out.
Absolute coward's performance from him.
Worst current player in the Premier League.
Slug.
Charlatan.
Useless carthorse.
Glue factory.
Trash.

I'm sure there were previous comments of the 'fraud' and 'stealing money from the club' variety, too. None of this is remotely justified for a bloke who is far from what he was, but always tries. Coleman's goal today, where he shoved his face in the way of a flying boot makes a mockery of the message board heroes who can call him a coward. I'm not saying there's necessarily a conspiracy against him, it might just be people making themselves feel big by ganging up on another, but I find this level of unnecessary nastiness sad and frankly pathetic.

Just a case of internet forum syndrome, where everybody tries to outdo the other for how low they can go, or how outrageous they can be. Wouldn't dare say it to the guy's face either.

I don't think he's any of the things above, but he is definitely not the player he was, and badly needs replacing in the summer. I still love the guy, it's not his fault he has to be picked.

Halfwits...

He's been directly responsible for giving away about 10 goals this season, and he's scored a total of one (plus zero assists as far as I remember) so right now he's on a minus 9.
Most will agree he's past his best but that doesn't mean he's not arsed. He's been brilliant over the years and he still gives as much now as 5 years ago. He was brilliant today and a class leader.

Absolutely love the guy, tbh. One of the truest blues around and, for a couple of years in his pomp there, one of the best in his position in Europe.

He's been asked to carry the RB position far beyond where he should have, and for all that he's struggled these past few years where he just doesn't have the legs for such a high-intensity position, you can never doubt the application or the desire.

Frankly, for that, he's the greatest Everton hero of these past 20 years. Who else better embodies the spirit of our noble, futile struggle against mediocrity? From that very mediocrity he came, and into it he'll fade. But for those of us who were there we'll know: he was Seamus, he was [Poor language removed] good and he really, truly cared.

….Lampard was full of praise for ‘a special man, a special captain and a special player’. Gordon also praised his leadership post match.

Odd that some don’t think he’s a very good captain.

Dead right Eggs. I think there is something darker behind some of this.

Im Irish and absolutely love Seamus Coleman as a player for us down the years. I was right down in front of it at the Aviva when he had that horrific injury and was gutted for him

I completely agree that I dont think any complete slating of him or any abuse has been deserved.

And i dont think a player being out of form and/or struggling as they get older is something to hold against them personally.

However if he is as passionate about the club as he has shown today, I still just dont get some of the performances from him and even average seasons from him when things were not great all these years since Martinez first season. Theres been moments where you couldnt see anything out on the pitch and you looked to the captain and there was just nothing there to be honest. I can remember particularly when things went to crap under Martinez and Silva and I wanted to see him urging us on when behind and hurrying us up to get forward but he was just another quiet ineffective non presence on the field. I remember he used to wind me up taking ages to get the ball and take throw ins when we were behind and needed to get back. The opposite of the stuff we saw today. I still have a bit of a grudge against the players who went to crap under Martinez and Seamus is no exception. I just saw an utter lack of responsibility on the field regardless of the competence of the manager.

There could be other behind the scenes reasons for this stuff, but i wouldnt accept that he always has given 100% and has always been a great captain as from what ive seen thats not the case in a fair few periods over the last 10yrs (yes i know he wasnt captain all that time). We have been utterly woeful and devoid of any spirit regularly under his captaincy.

Having said that, the thought of him lifting the FA Cup does make me smile, and today was fantastic from him
