2017/18 Seamus Coleman

Seamus doesn’t seem to suffer fools or ego’s.....there was talk a while back of a falling out with Lukaku once. I know these things get blown out of any real proportion- even if true in the first place - but today the captain is more than ceremonial, so it’s important to get it right. Gets extra players Lounge tickets for guests for example on match day!

We know referee’s, despite their claims to contrary, do get influenced by the one player supposed to be the only one able to communicate with them about things on the pitch. Suffered more than once there haven’t we. Jagielka has been a role model professional, Corinthian attitude and all that, rarely booked and a good guy all round. Hard to say he shouldn’t hold the armband if that’s how every team captain was in the same mould. They are not.....leaders can be effective by many different styles....I just think that we get rolled over at times because our current captain doesn’t get in the face of officials, opposition players or do the eye catching, media favoured bawling out. So is viewed as inoffensive by referees and the media....little Everton syndrome.

Any Everton Captain on the pitch has to be respected firstly by his team mates, trusted by the manager and has a rapport with the fans. So, rules out Williams, who I reckon isn’t as effective as being captain of Wales & Swansea, this seemed to bring something else that he has failed to show in an Everton shirt other than his offield pushing with the keeper once.

Jags...if he stays, as club captain...and Seamus would be as popular an on field playing captain choice that there could be, both with teammates and fans. If both are selected, armband stays with Seamus and Jags for off field and media support. Got other problems than this, but no harm in making an early call on this. Personally think he’ll leave as is.

I agree with all of this - its one of the few things Rooney was really good at apparently - he seemed to be acting like our big rep on the pitch, and arguing decisions etc - apart from that Niasse ridiculous booking for simulation -
Anyway, the point is , we need this type of representation on the pitch, and it has to be Coleman. Jags has done fine, but we need this attitude. I can't think of anyone else, apart from Pickford, even at his young age. Coleman is the boss though

Coleman has been our best outfield player since he returned.

Of course, Silva may have different ideas for his wing-backs and new faces both sides. Who can say?
