I like Stones and Alcaraz. I would even try Besic there. Jags and Distin are living on past glories but their inability on the ball is where our problems start.

This is why I'd like to see Van Dijk come in from Celtic, he's very comfortable on the ball as well as being a strong defender! Celtic wouldn't be able to turn down a fee in the region of £8 million. He'll be worth more than that as soon as he steps out of the SPL into a top league!

Osman, hibbert and Distin and you can add Jagielka to those.

I agree with you mate. He made a massive error handing out extensions to clueless players like that. The good news is, anytime he acquires his nerve again, he can see them out the door or transfer list them. He has to build on youth and determined and talented outsiders now plus what can be salvaged from this first team.

I'm intrigued to see which way he goes. If he remains as conservative in the next 12 months as he has been since the start of this season I'll be right behind those trying to run him out of the club with pitchforks. But I have a feeling he'll turn it and come out trumps. He's very talented and I don't expect him to put up with this sh1te for too much longer, despite the mr. Nice Guy front.
That's what I think too. He's loyal and doesn't want to kill the team from last year but he's not stupid. I think the axe will get weld.

The fact he hasn't played recently tells me the same thing that in a team with no wingers

I always thought McGeady was too wasteful for a Martinez team. Decent player but we need to do better.

McGeady would be one of the last names on my starting XI - I'd have the entire first team midfield on the park before him. Not good enough, can go along with Robles (what use is a keeper who dives after the ball has gone?), Distin (now clearly 4th choice centre-half) and a few others I could name who should be ashamed of their efforts of late but will refrain from naming for now).

Of course it will, he would have to be daft or weak to put his own neck on the line just to keep players happy! I honestly think he will turn things around in 2015

Funny as Mcgeady was responsible for putting ball in the box at anfield that led to a goal and even against QPR he led to Naismith's goal. That is what wingers do from time to time.

Think he may have had a falling out with Roberto. It's well documented that he didn't really get on well with Strachan at Celtic, and he fell out with his manager at Spartak. Bizarre that he hasn't featured at all in the last couple of games, especially seeing as we are very lightweight in that position.

Let me say first of all I am absolutely opposed to the notion of sacking Roberto Martinez. What I do have to say is that some things aren't looking too good so far this season - we've been found out a few times, we've been (fairly) abject in a number of games, we've enjoyed almost no good fortune in quite a few games and we've had a number of key injuries (not just to the likes of, say, Distin or Osman) - I'm thinking:

Baines, Mirallas, Coleman, Barkley, McCarthy (and importantly for our more creative side: Pienaar), Naismith, Stones. I think, with the exception of Pienaar all those (seven) would be considered starters. We're badly in need of those players being at their best and they just aren't. I can't explain their injuries but it seems a few of them have been targeted in-play and that just isn't helping us get going. Today we weren't very good (at least not in the sense of breaking down a sh*thouse team that came to spoil, cheat, waste time and steal the points with a dubious penalty and just about nothing else of note for 90 minutes which is rather disappointing to say the least). With little or no inspiration from most of the key players mentioned above (many of whom were kicked from pillar to post from the kick off) it's difficult. I think we need a harder edge to our game. Other teams seem to have it - Besic has it (where was he today? Yet another one injured?).
I could be wrong but before today we only had 3 of our regular squad players/subs who had not been injured this season. Jags , howard and mcgeady. Which leaves mcgeady! .

Distin perhaps, but Osman and especially Hibbert are still useful squad players and rewarding club servants is rarely a bad thing.

Martinez's problem is that he is trying to implement a way of playing that is similar to what some of the big teams are doing but with no money and - this season at least - older, slower, and less gifted players. We are too slow and everyone in the league either knows how to play against that sort of thing or is at least familiar with it.

For me, what happens in January is going to make or break this season. Stay relatively injury free, drop Barry, and sign one or two players that could add pace, directness and take some of the pressure off Coleman / Baines / Mirallas etc and we would look a much better side. If its true that Salah is available for loan in January we should be first in the queue.

He would be a very good acquisition. The SPFL is too easy for him. Hasn't been as impressive in Europe but still a decent defender. Got a lot of great attributes and still young too. As you said 8 million would almost certainly get him here.
