Kone - season over before he could get fully fit
Robles - hasn't played much but his presence has lead to Howard's best form at the club
Alcaraz - looked very good in the few games he's played
Barry - excellent signing and a potential free transfer in the summer
McCarthy - hardly put a foot wrong, potential future captain
Deulofeu - added a real threat to our attack. Missed him since he got injured
Lukaku - Scorekaku
McGeady - who knows, but gives us options at the very least

Signing players for Wigan is a different thing to signing them for Everton, and there's no reason to make a comparison. So far Martinez's success rate has been pretty impressive here. Pellegrini is probably the only other manager in the league who can say over 50% of his summer transfers have been a success.

Okay, so one out of a list 12 didn't light the world on fire, they all did what they were brought in to do, keep wigan up for 8 years. Plus a lot on that list are free transfers, or minimal fees.

Roberto only kept them up for 3 and more than one of those players listed were gash. Point taken about price etc, but the point being made by the other poster, was that his record wasn't flawless in the transfer market & he'd signed his fair share of duds - especially in the striker dept.

Is it just me who can remember taking the piss out of the red ****e after they were trying to sign Kenwyne Jones from Sunderland, i vividly remember a chorus of "Rafael sign him up, Rafael Rafael sign him up" as he hits a shot from 30 yards that is closer to the corner flag than the goal. Quite ironic really....

All of these player were good players for Wigan, at the time, there is a reason they stayed up for 8 years, obviously compared to us they are bad players, but you need to look at it from Wigans point of view at the time.
They were all signed within Martinez's time at Wigan i.e. from 2009 onwards. So none of them could claim to have kept Wigan up for more than 3 years, and most couldn't even claim that. Truth is they stayed up for as long as they did in spite of the players listed, all of whom were duds.

With the exception of McGeady (who hasn't played for us yet, of course) Martinez is yet to sign a player for Everton who isn't a) on loan or b) played for him at Wigan (and who therefore didn't require scouting). Given his patchy record in the transfer market it's fair to retain a certain skepticism of his ability to scout a player, though I hope he proves my skepticism to have been misplaced.

In terms of 8 years, i mean the 8 years Wigan stayed up for, even though those players only kept them up for 3. I just dont think you can judge a manager on 1 or 2 bad buys, all managers have their transfer flops, and i don't think it's fair to judge them of one or be negative about them, before it's even happened!!

Pretty sure we have better targets than Jones, hopefully things are going to happen soon with the Jela money coming in too?

Connor (Sammon?), you're goofed up on Martinez balls and that's boss. But looked at objectively Martinez has made some bad buys in the past. You keep saying it's only one or two bad buys, but I listed 14 in my post (over 3 years; nearly 5 bad buys per season) and your only defence is that they kept Wigan up for 8 years. Which they didn't.

If we shouldn't judge a manager's ability in the transfer market on his past transfer record, what should we judge them on? Whether or not they manage Everton?
