Silly Season January 2014

Pleased with this to be honest, we need a CM but don't need one to start so McCarthur will be a good signing given he doesn't cost an arm and a (broken) leg. Bobby knows him too so that whatever we pay for him we'll most likely be paying his real price in his value to the team.

although he is a decent player i don't think James McArthur is what we need. i can't help but feel a little dissapointed.

Ok lads has anyone seen him play more than 2-3 times?

Gives us the low down

not even going to lie Del. Not trying to wind you up now but I honestly thought he was better than McCarthy when I watched Wigan but I didn't really look out for McCarthy (didn't see all the fuss about him). The way he passes the ball is weird though. He leans forward a bit like Ozil.

Jesus! A top 4 contender won't be happy with a bench like that.

So far:

McCarthy = been very good for us: success so far.
Alcaraz = looked good, but injury-prone: jury out.
Joel = flapped to let a goal in, not solid: failure so far.
Kone = looked horrendous, then got injured for a year: failure.

1 out of 4 is not a great success rate.
We are an anomaly when it comes to the top 7 or so in that we can't just chuck money at wonderful back up players who can slot seamlessly into the first team when required. The quality of the first team is high but for the bench the quality drops off a cliff face and has in recent years. Raising the standard of the bench means we are a lot less reliant on 13 or 14 players to play full tilt for a season and effectively carry those coming from the bench. The players you mention, McCarthy aside, are backups.

yes a few times, never seems to stand out and always seems to miss sitters. from memory was on the bench quite a bit but that may of been under coyle so doesnt count.

Thanks for the heads up.If Roberto thinks he can do a job that's good enough for me.
Yeah, take your 50k a week, Roberto loves ya!

As someone posted a few pages back: it bumps Osman down the pecking order, so I'm in for that reason alone.

Roberto must have acted on this with that Osman horror show at the Hawthornes. I thought he was a disgrace that night in performance and attitude. Well 'Ossie', here's your dinner.

Spot onn, also odd going for a 26year old he's managed before as for me this is a crucial signing to complete the centre of midfield.

Between whom? Managers? Chairman? Between Manager and Player? Which part is advanced? payment negotiations or salary and contract negotiations?

the stock reply is: "i can only tell you what i've been told"

The poster has always been accurate in his threads when he's been specific, so it's a good bet we're gonna get him.

Still an extremely disappointing signing.

The YouTube video of this guy is just a montage of shrugs followed by nods of approval and "he's not that bad" set to a pretty decent cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer."
