Did we give it a good go, really, truthfully? Or did we just try to stop them scoring for 90mins...be honest now!
It’s hopelessly naive to suggest going hell for leather against City. We were in with a shout for most of the game. The minute after opening up and taking off a defender we conceded a second.

Would you have tried to match City in midfield with our personnel And risked an absolute mauling?

You think us having a an attack or two would be akin to going toe to toe, defeatist attitudes all over the show, no wonder the players aren't arsed. the fan base let them off for parking the bus for 90 minutes after spending half a billion quid.

To many on here have become very very accepting of rubbish, it's awful to see us become like this.

How am I going to get mad at that Everton squad for losing that match ? We are multiple levels below City with no realistic way of ever catching them. Literally no player in our starting 11 would start for City and yet people getting salty we lost ?

Should be getting mad that a club is allowed to have a squad like Cities, football is lame as feck.

Definitely agree with the last point. My main gripe is just getting our tummies tickled, I never thought we would beat them and would take something special to knock them out but we just sat in our own half and never looked like winning that game ever, a cup game where there needs to be a winner and we play for a draw, makes no sense to me like but each to their own.

We had a plan, it didn't involve scoring any goals in a knockout game, not good enough.
So play so open like we did last 5-10 mins and risk an absolute mauling and it would have been ,or contain an exceptional city side for 80 mins whilst carrying a real threat from set pieces ,with the players we had out how did you expect Everton to go toe to toe with the best side in Europe ?

Look it was a knockout game mate. I'm not stupid enough to think we can match them toe to toe, that doesn't mean I want to watch 90mins of us camped in our own half either.

It's a cup game, I'd rather go out on my shield than whimper out without troubling the opposition. bare in mind this is two top half premier league teams with full internationals and yet we can't possibly in any way shape or form, get a win, sorry I can't hold that view, never been a fan of sitting and hoping to nick something. I don't like it and never will, I want to see us try.

However It's not carlos fault the players have a 59% pass completion rate, that's the issue.

We had ten shots to their fifteen. We did have some attacks. I saw them.
We actually played better than I expected and it was a closer to game than the score line suggested.
We played an Italian defensive game and it nearly worked.
‘having a go’ against a side that plays possession football that well is almost impossible. What could we have changed? Our only other attacking option was Iwobi?

Mate, you're looking at it the wrong way.
Plan A; was not to Concede any, try and score if possible - aka, KITAP1.
Plan B; was obviously Penn's.

City's plan was keep on pressuring us until we made a mistake...and they only had to get lucky once...which they did.
We took a defender off and conceded another.
Hindsight might say, at 70 mins we bring in Another defender or defensive MFer. And go 'all in' for pennos.

But even then we Still have to be lucky All the time - And City Still only have to get lucky once

Reality says; we effectively had Davies and Iwobi on the bench and they had Mahrez and KDB.

Mate I understand what you are saying but without Doucoure we have a pedestrian midfield and no right side, tell me please, what other tactics could we have employed?

In a knockout game, we should at least try and score, call me old fashioned, I dunno, that sort of football just isn't for me, I hate it. I haven't once said we should have just turned up and won, they are defacto the best side in the league but the difference in two top half premier league teams shouldn't be so big that you're scared too attack for fear of conceding.

I'm very disheartened today.

I fear you'd be more disheartened if we'd tried to have a go at them and been ripped apart in the most predictable way imaginable.

I know I would be.

Not in a knockout game mate, I'd rather go out on my shield. \people are talking about us like we are league two or something. I can't wrap my head around it. Here's an alternative theory, attacking may have resulted in goals, which you need to win. Cup games should be played as such, playing for a draw to get penalties makes me angry.

We tried that under Martinez. It was absolutely horrific by the end. Anything seems better than what you're doing currently when things aren't going 100% well.

With every player fit, we are still nowhere near as good as them. We were decimated by injuries to key players.

I feel this should be relatively obvious, but City and Guardiola would have been rightly made up if we'd tried to take them on. Seamus Coleman, Andre Gomes and Gylfi Sigurdsson taking the fight to a side with KDB and Aguero on the bench. They'd have buzzed and ripped us to bits. We stayed in the game, limited them to very little and were matching them on attempts at goal until the last 10 minutes.

We did well. If we'd managed to nick one from a set piece, we may even have won the game. We did what we could to be realistic and neutralise their threat, but we only actually retreated to our box for the last 10 minutes. That wasn't a bus parking job.

We tried to hit them on the break and make the most of set-pieces. I agree, if we had something resembling our best 11 and we just had an 11 men behind the ball display I would also have been frustrated. But without Doucoure we can't really press in midfield. Coleman is aging, Holgate isn't a rightback, Iwobi not really a right winger... James can peg teams back on our right because they're very weary of his quality if he gets any time and space, but he's injured as well. King was cuptied so we didn't even really have another striking option on the bench.

Man it's crap, I'm devo'd that we're going yet another year without silverware, but I just don't know what more we could have done than try and make the most of the few moments we got.
