Out of curiosity, how far from Liverpool? Trying to get to the UK and make a match in September, and, why does this appeal? :D
Obviously depends on where you want to go . It’s about 380 ish miles into the heart of Speyside, take the A9 north by road and turn right at Aviemore, you’ve then got about 20 plus different distillery tours available. All are very good value, some are little known, Glenfiddich is great value and one to impress your friends with when you’re back.some will be starting to shut their tours for the winter late September, so check in advance.

The star distillery attraction this year is the new Macallan distillery, well worth a visit. My cousins are up from Liverpool in a few weeks and I’m taking them there, it looks to be a great experience.

Im up in Scotland early August, staying on the black isle just north of Inverness. I've booked a distillery trip to the Tomatin distillery, any others nearby that fellower gotters would recommend?
Glen Ord at the Muir of Ord is probably the nearest distillery, but it’s well worth a trip up the A9 and the coast to Tain and the Glenmorangie distillery .
Also the Black Isle Brewery is a good place to visit.

I bought a bottle of Glenfidich in a supermarket somewhere in the UK last month for 15 pounds - I think it was 500 ml - and it was sensational, so smooth. I decided to buy some at the duty free when I got back at Melbourne airport, but there were so

many different varieties at very varying prices that I wasn't able to decide on what was a good deal. Ended up buying a Jim
Beam fake Drambuie copy!

That's why I'm reluctant to spend a few $$ on the Ardbeg...don't want to take the risk.
Ardbeg is well worth the risk . I “peaked on peaty” whiskys a few years ago , still got some Lagavulin and Ardmore, but Ardbeg is the only new one I’d buy. I bought a bottle for my son’s 30 th recently and he loves it. He likes Lagavulin and I sold him on Ardbeg by saying it’s a hidden gem that people don’t know about , tell people it’s better than Lagavulin, which he now does ! Whisky snobbery !

Just wondering what qualities it has over the Laphroig to make me take the plunge...

Bottled at 46% as opposed to 40%, non chill-filtered, wouldn't appear to contain caramel colouring judging by the colour, although they don't actually state this.

Why not order a drop if you see it in a pub or bar? Save you buying a whole bottle.

Master of Malt also do 35ml samples of many whiskies. Their prices on full bottles are usually pretty competitive.

If you're a fan of Laphroaig I wouldn't have thought you'd be disappointed.

Nice one, bought a bottle during the week...on offer now at Tesco...tenner off.

God knows when I'll crack it though as I've got a few others to get through and I wanna keep it for a 'special occasion'. I'm a massive fan of Laphroaig so I'll be disappointed if it doesn't at least match that.

I'm a big fan of Laphroaig, the cask strength 10yo is one of my favourite whiskies, but I prefer the standard Ardbeg 10 to the standard Laphroaig 10.

Don't think you'll be disappointed.

Paid a visit to the Glenmorangie distillery on Friday. Fantastic place and I left with a 12 year old Nectar D’or matured in Sauternes cask which I’m told imparts a sweetness of honey and vanilla.

Will update you once tasting has been completed.

Glad you enjoyed it.
I had my cousins up from Liverpool this last week and booked a visit to the new Macallan distillery. It’s a superb experience , all state of the art modern visuals while allowing you to see the distilling side too. The site has been architecturally designed to blend into the landscape, eco friendly etc. They’ve spent £140 mill on this new distillery including a state of the art visitors warehouse which is well worth seeing too - we nearly skipped it. You get the usual tasting experience of four whiskies, but if you like climbing up steps, seeing liquid flowing, steam drips down your neck and the varying smells you get at the smaller older distilleries this may not be for you. But we’ll worth a visit if you are in Speyside/ Craigelachie area .
