Single malts

I’ve just finished my 12 yr old Glenmorangie nectar d’or which was amazing. Smooth, with notes of toffee, vanilla and white chocolate.

I’m keen to try an Islay malt next but I’m unsure of what to get. I like a bit of smoke but I don’t want to be overpowered by it. So I’m looking for smoothness with a hint of smoke

Any suggestions?
Go to a bar with a big variety of whiskeys - a knowledgeable bartender can set up a flight of samples for you covering a range of distilleries and tastes, arranged in order that doesn't overwhelm you. Let's you get a good feel for what you really might like to purchase in larger amounts.

Not tried it but it has very good reviews. The distillers devote one week a year to infuse the barley with peat smoke, hence the name. Supposed to be very lightly smoky. I think I'll try and find a bottle myself now. It sounds very nice.

Just checked the price and it's pretty hefty at around £60. Maybe next year then.

Cracked open a bottle of Talisker Skye I picked up for £24 when Asda had it on sale last month tonight. Bloody decent. Plently going on there. Like it a lot more than the "Storm" expression they did a couple of years back or whenever it was.

Any thoughts on AncNoc 12? Received bottle as a gift but have not opened yet.

For bourbon fans, a very small distiller in Central Texas produces a winner... Ben Milam Single Barrel Straight Bourbon. First ever batch won a double gold medal at San Francisco World Spirits competition.

My daughters have offered to buy me a nice bottle of single malt for Christmas. Any recommendations? I've tried Ardbeg before and enjoyed it, but, wanted to try something a little less smokey. Pricewise, don't want them spending much more than £50 .
