Single malts

I always think if you buy a Supermarket's own Islay malt you're on to a winner because of the fact there are so few distilleries on the Island, they're all good and it would have to be from one of them.
Personally I occasionally go for the Asda Islay and it's always excellent and clearly from Islay but I will certainly now try the Aldi one, cheers.
In the spirit (see what I did there!) of investigation I will now try the Asda own brand.

Just taken delivery of a 12 year old Bunnahabhain for Father's Day. Something tells me it will be open a bit earlier. lol
Liquid gold

Aaaaaalmost picked up the Ardbeg Blaaack 20th Anniversary but didn't want to shell out $140+, after taxes. I had to stand there with it in my hand for about 5 mins and talk myself out of it, mind you. Got this and Glenmorangie Lasanta 12, for about $45 less. Way too early in the journey for me to be dropping that much on a single bottle when I can go two for one until I find my jam...which is looking more and more like it'll be an Islay.

It’s nice that

I took a bit of a punt on one of the Aldi single malts.
Glen Marnoch Limited Release Islay single malt. Cost all of £17.99. Opened it a poured a measure into my glass and smelled it. Before drinking I looked to see what others have said about it.
Considered opinion is that the Caol Ila distillery produced it. Certainly passed my smell test. As soon as in my mouth absolutely no doubt it's an Islay whisky. I measure my Islay whisky against Laphroig and this whilst not reaching the Laphroig standard, for the price it's a no brainer if you're watching your coppers.
I've had that. Agreed that it's not quite there but great value.

I took the Laphroaig challenge many years ago. Let me explain.
Although I was an occasional whisky drinker, it was the blends I was offered.
Then I heard the term "single malt" and bought my first bottle, Glenlivet a Speyside malt and took it from there.
I then saw the Laphroaig ad where it said try a bottle where it also said, after half a bottle you'll either finish it or throw the rest away. I finished it and have loved every drop since.
Also a member of the Friends of Laphroaig with my own square foot of turf in the distillery.

I struggled with Laphroaig at first. Tasted like flowers. Now I love it.

That Port Charlotte Heavily Peated is lovely stuff.

I've considered forking out for the Blaaack but for the £££ is it really going to be that much better than the Oogy or the Corry?

Yeah, I've not been disappointed with either of the two Bruichladdie's I've had so far. I've still got to nab a Bunnahabhain, Ardbeg, Bowmore and Caol Ila to complete the initial Islay run...so, still a way to go.

Have you gone to Feis Ile, Grouch?
If you've got Amazon Prime, Bowmore is currently £20 a bottle on there which is a fair price for a serviceable Islay.
