I've had lots of visitors the last few months, with the result that my Whisky Cabinets have diminished somewhat so did a quick stock take last night :Highland Park 12 yr; and 25 year (1988 distilled); Glen Moray; Lagavulin 14; Glenlivet 18; Inchgower 14; Scapa 16; The Macallan Gold; Glen Grant 10; Penderyn; "Speyside single malt 15"; a couple of decent blends , Chivas Regal 12 and Johnnie Walker "The Spice Road " plus a number of other blends . I have a gap for a Highland Park 18 but usually I take whatever comes along (presents etc)unless I see something specific that catches my eye .
Then this morning in the post from my brother came a Craigellachie 13 year old , 1 litre bottle he'd picked up on his travels. I've passed their distillery many times , it has a large Dewars & Sons on it so I assumed it's output was largely into blended whisky, and I've never seen a bottle out there. Anyway its one for the weekend and I'll report back.

What do you make of the Scapa 16? I tried the ill fated 14 which didn't last long but was not impressed. The 16 is supposedly infinitely better.

I've just got a bottle of Glen Marnoch Special Edition Highland, £17.99 from Aldi. Excellent value for money. Obviously slightly unrefined but totally quaffable and for the price you just can't go wrong

Well I must admit I'm not a " a nice hint of pommegranates followed by a lingering aftertaste of sun ripened sandalwood ..." man , I just like what I like ,everybody's different, and I do like the Scapa 16 , its smooth and an excellent whisky. It was a present from No1 son but I'd buy another. I bought my father in law, who was Orcadian, a bottle of Scapa 14 a few years ago when he was alive and it was distinctly inferior to Highland Park 12 and not memorable in my opinion. But despite being only a few miles apart they are completely different whiskies (HP&Scapa that is).
Orkney is my favourite Island, an awesome place . The Highland Park distillery is worth a visit, and the Scapa distillery nestles besides a beach on Scapa Flow and is very visible but I've never visited it. I think it's only recently they've opened for visitors, they didn't used to.

Was thinking of getting me dad this for christmas anyone drank it?
Yep, I've got a bottle of The Macallan Gold in my cabinet, I won it in a raffle recently and its not far from finished so that's a good sign. It wasn't one I would have chosen to buy , but it's a decent whisky and very drinkable. I agree with harris, it's extra for being personalised, although it makes a nice present. It may be worth checking out the comparable "off the shelf" cost of The Macallan 18 , which is a superb whisky but expensive.
Actually The Macallan Gold is attractively packaged as it comes so I'd go with that and save the money.......or maybe I've been living in Scotland too long.
