Single malts

An interesting week whisky wise for me. Last Saturday my two sons came up , for Christmas my daughter had set up a "Lads day out". She gave us vouchers for a pub restaurant so we could have a meal in the evening, and a suggested tour of Glen Grant distillery . Having done Glen Grant I arranged a visit to the Strathisla distillery instead , and it's is closer . It's a nice wee distillery, not much of its single malt gets out as its mainly used for Chivas Regal blend. I know this is a single malts thread but Chivas is a pretty decent blend particularly the 18 year old. We finished off the evening after the meal with a spot of whisky tasting at home.

Then on Thursday my mate suggested we go to a local Whisky Auction, how could I refuse. Had to sit through quite a bit of tat being auctioned before they got to the whisky bit , but then it was good fun. They were concentrating on two distilleries which are local to us Glenglassagh and Inchgower , which is "local" in that I can see it from my conservatory. He was looking to add to his collection e.g. Paid £200 for a Glenglassagh , I was buying to drink and seeking to replenish my Inchgower 14 yr old which is nearly finished and will be soon as I m drinking it while typing. Anyway, long story short , I ended up bidding and buying an Inchgower 15 yr , distilled 1993 for£35, and an Inchgower 11 yr Cask strength 61% Bourbon Hogshead distilled 1989 , for £40. While part of the reason for buying is the novelty aspect for visitors I'm really looking forward to trying them , particularly to see if I'll like the Cask Strength. And I can now finish off the 14 yr Inchgower knowing I've got back up for visitors...

£44 in my local Tesco at the moment so on line itll meet the £50 criteria.
Sweeter flavour than my favourite Oban Distiller's Edition, but leaves that lingering little burn in the throat on the way down. The Distiller's Edition hits you with a stronger burst of power, but miraculously seems to evaporate in the mouth and leave no, or minimal, burn whatsoever...hence it's more expensive.

Disclaimer: the above is the author's personal opinion and is not the opinion or policy of Oban. :)

I went to the Whisky shop on Fenwick street but it was tiny and the place had 3 people in meaning I couldn't move, they had lots of way too expensive bottles and now sign of the Little Bay. I ended up in Tesco and after some serious umming and arghing I decided on a bottle of Old Pulteney 12 yo for £26. I know, I know, but that means I can double up my drinking for the same price and it's a mighty fine dram at that price.

Strathisla is a lovely malt. I've not tried the others you mentioned but I'll be in Scotland later in the year so expect a "Visitor" and have my nosing glass ready!

Asked my mum, she's been there - said it was pricey.

Yep, I've been to the Distillery. One of the best I've visited, mainly for the knowledgable staff, the wee dram straight from the cask, the other wee dram from the bottle and the free glass. Even better because I'm a Friend of the Malt so get to go to them all for free (you can too if you take a look at Diagios website)

Guess what I'll be doing when I wake up tomorrow? ;)
