Sir Landon Of Donovan

Faster than Coleman?

Faster than Distin?

Faster than Baines?

Not a chance lad.

I would like to see Landon Donovan back at the club, but if we're being held to ransom for anything over £3m plus £40k p/w in wages - then I'm gonna say no because he's an old man.

Right now he's faster than Baines and Distin. Also, Distin is 34 so you kind of contradicted your comment about losing your pace quickly after 30. Coleman may be faster than Lando. I'd like to line them up and see. Donovan doesn't rely on pace as much as he did before, but make no mistake. He still has it in bunches.

During his time at Everton, he'd whack the ball past the full back and run on to it - not the strongest so he'd either win a fowl or get past and knock it in.

I am not saying that Landon is a bad player, by any extent. But they want too much for him, and his wages seem to be higher than what he's actually worth.

I guess we just disagree on what he's worth to us then. I hope we get the chance to find out. I'm off. Cheers.

(see minute 8)

Pace is just fine.

This was his game in previous years - I'll be honest, sure. But his assist record in the last few years has increased and increased and increased.

His assists these past few years in MLS are increasingly NOT about pace - and you also saw that when he played with us in the spring:
1) pinpoint through ball to Anichebe
2) backwards pass to Straq
3) two pinpoint crosses to Fellaini and Straq

That isn't whacking the ball past the fullback and running onto it.

Since I watch him every week in MLS I can tell you - his assists more and more are all about off the ball movement and combination play. With that said, he operates best running into space. But to say he has poor ball handling - that's not quite accurate.

Yes, I'm biased. But it doesn't mean that I can't use the play I watch week in week out as examples to refute your claims.

If you want to tell me you don't want him for other reasons go ahead, but telling me he's "too old." Well, you can argue against that easily.

Also, we do not know his price. Why are you assuming it's exorbitant? And his wages are PEANUTS compared to other EPL players. How are they higher than he's worth? He makes less than some squad players in the EPL. His current salary is $2 million.

Against the Portland Timbers.

Would love to see him do that against Arsenal, Chelsea, United, Liverpool, City...
Beckham looked pretty fast in comparison there as well.

I was using that video as an illustration of pace. Not the quality of the Portland Timbers.

You did. When he played here. And last I checked, he was quite successful against those teams and provided assists against them.

Ok look at it this way.

Landon Donovan signs in, aged 30. 5 year deal at £50k p/w (around £2.6m a year).

So it's £5m + (£2.6m * 5) = £18m.

£18m for a player who we're gonna get about 2 good years from, and then for him to be unsellable.

No.

Not at all.

a) We've heard from several people it's a 2 year deal.
b ) That's over double what he's making in MLS. Don't think he's going to be paid that much.
c) "we're gonna get about 2 good years from" - applies to other players on your squad age 30+. Guess they are all useless.

If you are going to trot out this argument, then you should have applied it to Pienaar.

Your math is based on a whole bunch of assumptions. You have no idea what the contract will be.

Or keep Anichebe on 35k a week which works out to cost us 9.1million...

Where the heck are you coming up with these numbers? He wouldn't be valued at £5m, and who said anything about a 5 year deal. Making up numbers does not help you prove your point. It makes you seem desperate.

I don't think Landon's agent will allow him to leave for a club like Everton without securing a long-term future - look at van Persie at Arsenal.

I haven't seen enough of Landon Donovan at a high-enough level to warrant a move which will eventually cost us £15m in the long run. I watch a lot of MLS on both my computer and and ESPN, but for crying out loud - David Beckham is one of the best players in the league and he's 37.

It's all well and good saying "It's gonna work for two seasons, quick success" - but you also have to look at the long term financial restraints it's going to put on the club and whether it's actually really worth it.

I'd have him, but only at the right price.
