Sir Landon Of Donovan

If we can afford him, adding depth to our squad and having another attacking option in the form of Donovan is a complete no brainer in my opinion. It showed in the derby that our high paced, direct attacking play disappeared when neither Pienaar or Mirallas were on the pitch. People say in hindsight Oviedo might have been the better option than Gueye to bring on at half time but if truth be told we don't know for sure he would have had a bigger impact if brought on at half time. As well as Naismith played on the right, he doesn't have the pace or ability to take on a player like Pienaar, Mirallas (our 2 main wingers atm) and Donovan.

I don't think Mirallas' international experience should bear much weight to be honest, the Belgian squad has a wealth of talent where as Donovan and Dempsey are two of the few stand out players for the US. Belguim are spoilt basically.

We've only seen Mirallas on the left hand side a couple of times, and as well as he did against she sh*te we can't forget the incredible partnership Pienaar and Baines have on that left side. The idea of moving Pienaar to the centre isn't a bad one but that means Fellaini would have to move back to CM, which is something that I cannot see happening unless there are a few injuries.

I'd love to see Mirallas on the left but I don't think putting Pienaar on the right (or even dropping him for Donovan) is going to happen, plus I think it would upset the balance of our team, it's tried and tested. As the saying goes, if it's not broken don't fix it.

But I'd argue that our right hand side does need fixing, and that's why I'd play Donovan ahead of Mirallas at right midfield.

Mirallas is still a contender (for the left hand side, IMO) whereas Donovan's goal scoring and assist making record has been top class for many a year, with a few more years to come.

I think it is relevant to point out that Donovan remains the USA’s best player whilst Mirallas doesn’t even start for Belgium. Belgium are not Brazil, they have a similar world ranking to the US, and they haven’t even qualified for a major tournament in over 10 years.

Belgium have a far better side than the US. Fifa rankings mean very little.

Don't think I'd be happy with us paying like £5m or something for a 30+ player. Just my opinion like.

We bought a 30+ Pienaar for 4.5million just a few months ago, and nobody seemed to have a problem with it.

Distin was over 30 and cost about 5million as well.

Those positions were priorities at the time though. Any money we have should be spent on CM imo.

I agree that CM is more of a priority than RM.

But at the same time, I think we would actually be getting Donovan on the cheap. And I truly believe that he would make a major difference playing on that right hand side.

Belgium have one of the best squads in the world and are currently top of their qualifying group, I fully expect them to fly up the rankings over the next few years.

So we keep on hearing.

It would be nice to see them actually qualify for a tournament before everyone starts raving about them.

Whether they perform as a team isn't the issue, their players are brilliant individually whether the Belgium team has success or not.

It is an issue when you are discussing whether the Belgium national side is better than the US national side.

If they're that good then qualifying for their first tournament in over 10 years shouldn't be a problem.

Tbf to mirallas he was starting for belgium at the start of this campaign. he's only been dropped for the very in form benteke and he's still 1st choice striker sub. As well as that, his competition for the wide places are eden hazard and dries mertens and then fellaini for the acm position - donovan has had nowhere near that kind of competition but regardless, he has been great for his country.

Has nobody mentioned dropping pienaar if donovan would come? i wouldn't personally, but you're all saying i wouldn't drop mirallas for donovan or i wouldn't leave donovan on the bench for mirallas etc. could be argued that they're both just as good as pienaar. If it was up to me, despite how good he has been, i would push felli back, he's not a good enough finisher with his feet for me to be playing that role. he's also such a great player at breaking up play, winning aerial duals, winning 50/50's that he can start a lot of attacks, whilst bursting forward and joining play - he's only 2nd behind yaya toure at doing such stuff for me - just not as good of an engine. overall, if landon does come i don't envy moyes with the decisions he has to make.

Fellaini Gibson
Donovan Mirallas Pienaar

is a scarily good midfield from where i'm standing and mirallas and donovan can easily interchange throughout a game. Could argue pienaar can do as well, but i'd prefer the baines partnership not to be broken

They have far better players. If you think otherwise, you're wrong.
