Sir Landon Of Donovan

Why would you be comparing their records over the last 10 years though. We're talking about their current squads. US have a few players playing for decent teams. Belgiums squad is full of players playing for the top sides in Europe!

The current side who failed to qualify for the Euros.

It doesn't matter how good their squad is on paper, they still have yet to qualify for a major tournament in recent memory.

I'm feeling a bit too much pro-USA athmosphere here again. You can't compare Belgium with the USA. USA has most likely been the better team for the last ten years, but it hasn't been anything special. US also has a lot easier rout to qualify to competitions, it's pretty much automatic so it's really not valid to compare that. I don't think USA has any players that are special, you have the aging pair of Dempsey and Donovan who on their days are good but for neither you can say have had an illustrious career behind them (certainly not ahead of them at this point). Belgium on the other hand has a young team that has yet to glue and we'll see if they can deliver on their promise but they seem to have quality all over the park.
Donovan is a good professional who had two short spells with us and did well, but he's hardly a pacey winger these days.

USA (or USMNTLOL) is very mediocre. Deal with it.

Their team isn't exactly young...

Kompany 26
Vertonghen 25
Vermaelen 26
Gilet 28
Dembele 25
Fellaini 24
Witsel 23
Hazard 21
Mirallas 25
Mertens 25

And besides, they failed to finish ahead of Turkey in the Euro qualifications. Turkey aren't exactly world beaters.

It does when you're comparing the quality of their players.

It's not about that. You said the Belgium national team was better despite them never proving it.

I went and watched them against Wales and they didn't exactly look like world beaters. They have a lot to prove.

I'll say it again, Turkey finished above them in the Euro qualifiers.

Turkey.

It's not like they are 30+ like the USA stars. They are young especially if you compare the current squad to the last qualifications, which you are. I'm agreeing that in the past USA has had atleast a more cohesive unit, might've even had more class, but you have to compare crop to crop, ten years ago all these players were teens.

But being 30+ isn't a benefit. Most footballers reach their peak in their mid 20s but regardless it was only last year that they finished behind TURKEY.

TURKEY FFS

Of course it's about that.

Essex Blue said this 'I think it is relevant to point out that Donovan remains the USA’s best player whilst Mirallas doesn’t even start for Belgium. Belgium are not Brazil, they have a similar world ranking to the US, and they haven’t even qualified for a major tournament in over 10 years.'

He's basically saying that Donovan is better than Mirallas because he's his countries best player whereas Mirallas isn't even starting for his and the 2 teams are on a similar level. It isn't as simple as that. If Donovan was Belgian then he probably wouldn't be getting into that side either. Whether they qualified above Turkey isn't the point, it's about the quality of their players.

Is anyone really convinced that Mirallas and Donovan would be playing for the same spot? I don't see it.

I doubt very much if Donovan is coming this winter so it's likely a moot point.

And I hate to wade into the ridiculous argument, but I don't really think you can say Donovan is the best player on the US squad at the moment.

Which they have totally failed to live up to.
