Steven Naismith

So if he scores a hattrick coming off the bench this weekend again will he merit a start? Deserves the credit for putting in a blinder performance and also deserves the reward and chance to kick on.

Regardless of if its the right type of opponent for him or if it maybe screws over any tactical plan the manager could have hatched mate?

Thats theoretical ofc but who knows what Martinez had in mind for this game

Whilst Naismith wouldn't be my first choice to start on the wings vs Swansea given the likely counter attacking nature of the game, I think it'd send totally the wrong message to the other lids sat on the bench. 'So this guy scores a hatty from the bench and still can't get a game?'
The opposite would hold true for me. I'd think that the managers policy with that player in question had been vindicated and that keeping him hungry to come off the bench was working.

Too much fixation over who starts and doesn't. Basically we'll see 14 players on duty each game. Naismith will be one of them, likely as not. It's just that in his position we have players suited more to the managers method than him, so he'll be introduced when his tactics in-game have need to change.

Imagine Mirallas or Deulofeu had came on and scored a hattrick in that fashion and looked as hungry as Naismith did. 100% of people on here would have them starting the next game and that's a fact. This is literally just because it's Naismith.

Did you all see how much he gave out there? How much he wanted it? I'm not even a massive fan of his, but he deserves to start tomorrow and I bet my life he'll give absolutely everything out there again because he's dying to cement his place.

Preparing for naismith is akin to putting a seatbelt on on a plane that's about to nosedive into a building. It's futile

Haha you know what I mean. I'm sure Monkfish will be expecting Naismith on the left. We all know he doesn't stick on the left, as can be seen by his 3 goals last week all coming from his movements through the middle. I'm sure he'll have his defenders aware of the positions Naismith takes up. Martinez has plenty options, looking forward to seeing what he does

Naismith's movement is so clever, again demonstrated last week

Of course it's because he's Naismith. What's the issue with that ?

People don't want him to start because he lacks the flair, and well, in fairness the ability of those players.

But sometimes the passion and 100% commitment Naismith showed on Saturday can over rule ability.

I just can't understand people not grasping that he deserves to start tomorrow.

Deulofeu pretty much kept us in the cup game mate coming off the bench, didnt even get on the pitch since really, so not exactly true

Fair enough but that's against much lesser opposition and I think that's a fitness thing, he hasn't been up to speed up to now, I'm sure when he's fully fit he'll start a lot more.

Thing is mate, he was fit enough to star for the Spain under 21's setting up and scoring in the last ten minutes of a MoM performance, and the best way to get match fitness is after all to play, don't get me wrong here i can see why the arguments being made for him to start, at the same point think at United under ferguson you'd find he would pick the team he thought would do the job best regardless of what happened the week before or a player starring off the bench.

Cue him starting and playing a blinder now lol

True I suppose mate, I can see what people are saying about Roberto's game plan being more important. If he feels Naismith isn't suited to start then fair enough, he knows more than me.

My general feeling on it is that, especially with strikers, form is more important in the short term than ability. When someone hits scoring form like that you take advantage of it. Obviously you take goals from anywhere you can get them.

He's certainly not a mainstay in the starting XI but he starts tomorrow for me, and if he's crap then he can be subbed off and maybe not start the next game. If he scores and is impressive again then great, he stays in the team until his scoring form dries up.

If he was an out and out striker I'd tend to agree, but if he plays it will kinda be in the left mid spot anyway.

I'd be tempted to have him on the bench in case plan A fails and we need to go more direct or physical vs them, same with Kone, but I'd have him as a nailed on starter against Reading and West Brom as their set to be games we will need a bit of the Nais in

All 3 of his goals against Chelsea came from a central position though didn't they, was he really playing on the left?

Our shape is quite flexible anyway and players seem to rotate a bit during the game so we don't really seem to have anyone permanently on the left. Lukaku is quite effective receiving it on the left and running at people.

We could debate it all day really, we can only wait and see at 2 o clock tomorrow.
