It's a conundrum for sure.Maybe but one of the incidents that changed/helped us back then was Howard opening the window at Stoke in the cup, so they could hear how many fans were there "don't let these fans down" (or words to that effect). Also, attendances dipped badly in the early 1990s too- didn't do any good and nearly all the decade was poor. And the 'stay aways' did no good in the 1970s either. For example, close to 50,000 people at the start of the 1970/71 season to welcome the champions, ended up in around half that in attendance and some home games at the end of that season (when they didn't do so well). This hardly inspired the players for the next season.
Stoke is now in folklore, our away support has always been phenomenal but at home you are correct it has had those highs and lows but circumstances now are very different and while the focus is there by the media it may just work?
