Suarez's Punishment

Status
Not open for further replies.
He's bringing the game into disrepute by making it blatantly obvious he has no other intention other than either harming or trying to put off opponents by doing inexplicable and unpleasant things. It's not directly comparable to anything else because nobody else has done what he's done. He should be singled out and the media hype is because there is outrage because what he did is an outrageous thing to do. He's done it in front of a global audience and he should be punished severely.

Same crime though. In a massive game in the WC. Being investigated by WORLD authorities, not English, Dutch, or even UEFA.

FIFA have pretty much unlimited powers, in that they give themselves what powers they want. They should throw the book at him IMO.

Agree on the latter point, but on the former, surely you can see his prior offences have to factor into any kind of lengthier suspension. If it was his first offence, sure. I find it strange you deem biting a lesser evil in the game, seeing as it is a very ugly and personal form of attack. The game is rife with players who have lashed out with a leg, fist or head -- none of which is acceptable -- but biters are a much more exclusive club, probably because 99% of players don't think like an animal.

I think that's a slippery slope when you use criteria from another league/regs/players/competition etc as a basis for how you run things in FIFA and in a FIFA competition...This isn't the world court of football and FIFA is the prevailing power/judge, they rule in this competition only...unless I have misunderstood their purview

I understand your point. It's the repeat offenses that make me think it should be more.

A career ending tackle should be 20 games+ the first time. A bite should be 10. A second tackle of that sort should possibly be a lifetime ban. A second bite? 20. A third bite? A year.

So I'm not really arguing that a bite is super high up. But repeated bites add up.

Personally, I'd ban him for life. Mostly to wind up kopites though.

So he really is making a meal of this, isn't he?

It's the world governing body for football and as such its member organizations must follow its directives. If FIFA decrees a global ban and the English FA refuses to honour it, England could be expelled from FIFA. Extreme end of the spectrum, granted. So narrow the focus to the English FA. If it made a ruling on something, it would expect the regional and local bodies within the country to follow suit, right?

I can see your point about this being FIFAs competition, so they make up the rules regarding things like yellows being waived after group games etc, but the rules of the game arnt different. Shaving foam apart. So if two European FAs have already dished out punishment for identical offences, I dont see why FIFA wouldnt take their cue from previous sentences.

Its the rule of precedent.

Are you saying they have no say in what happens in other leagues/countries?

In my 46 years he's the 1st and only footballer that I can remember that has been banned for biting, he is of course also the 2nd and will now be the 3rd.

Biting was something that used to happen in the school Rugby League games against the French, in France the parents used to also spit at our kids in the changies through gaps in the floor of the stand above.

I can't see how he or anyone can even remotely think that he wont get a lengthy Ban, I don't know if they'll transfer it over to club football as well..... he deserves it to tbh, but there are a number of outcomes if either it does or doesn't.....

Lengthy Ban that could scupper him leaving & leave r/s with an asset they can neither use or cash in.
No club ban... he gets a move or stays at the pit & plays on

A lengthy ban where he falls out with the game or 'loses it' & r/s end up with rock all or Banned Sine Die would be the ultimate gift from Fifa tbh.

Adidas it seems are far from happy as well and their directors are discussing the situation, although they'll prob keep him and bring out 1 of those gumshields that looks like his teeth.

That's the thing, I don't think a ban is inappropriate but how can you go off different suspensions in other leagues/organizations as a basis for how you carry out his involvement in a separate competition?
thats an awful point. 'sure, he was drunk driving and hit a lady, but that was in Italy. Cant hold it against him in England here now that he has drunk driven and hit another lady'.

But you know already that FIFA view themselves differently/arrogantly and their punishments are far more muted in general...I could see them factoring in prior punishments into their final ban length but I don't think they will extrapolate to make the ban longer...Just a guess of course

You're trying to rationalize FIFA are you?...Good luck

Getting rather tired of the whole Suarez-is-mad/mentally ill/needs help thing.

He's not mad. He's a cold calculating cheat trying to win by any means. In what is effectively a KO game he knows full well that if Chiellini retaliates and smacks him in the chops he'll be sent off and its game set and match Uruguay.

Thats why be bites, why he makes nasty snidey fouls, why he goes to ground for nothing and possibly why he racially abuses. He is trying to get opposition players carded/sent off. He's always played that way - and it usually works because he gets away with it over and over.

A life ban would not be too harsh.

Well thats a different point, what FIFA will do, as opposed to what you think they should do.

And I think they should ban him, worldwide, for a long time.
