There are bargains to be had even in the PL, Gana was worth his fee, Robertson was £8m for the other lot, I think I have been burnt by us buying players with no PL experience (Klaasen, Sandro for example) and am over compensating with too many PL players. I think attitude is also important when dealing with millionaire footballers as what can you do to motivate them if their attitude stinks ? Fines are a joke, dropping them - so what they still get paid, its a difficult job as there is virtually nothing that worries them enough to change, money shields you from many problems in life.

There will be cash there to spend but he'll be holding the cards close to his chest unlike others before him.

No issues in trimming the squad first - for example, selling Rooney, Schneiderlin and Sandro frees over 350k a week in wages. That obviously is high up the list of things to do.
Obviously if he can trim the squad first ( I’d prefer a mass cull to a trim ) then he will know where he stands with budgets for purchases and wages.
All he is doing is letting other clubs know we are open for buisness and have players to sell
I would say Bar 7/8 players and a few young lads everybody in the squad has a price on their head

I thought Brands kept mentioning wanting business done by July 2? I'm pretty sure, paraphrasing him, that he said he's trying to get the squad in shape to start work as soon as those who will still be here get back.

Obviously desire and reality don't always mesh but I have faith in the new regime mostly because I'm tired of being cynical about us after last year.

Ah don’t think I heard that. Sounds more promising if not a little unrealistic.

Marcel will have to use all his powers of persuasion to get some of these to leave.

You'll have a better idea than me. Just a feeling that the new management team coming in will need loads of time to settle and make their minds up on what is needed, in and out.

This could mean we miss out on a few this summer.

Yeh I agree with that.

I think they generally know who they want out but until the players come back for pre-season it's hard to judge fully.

Fortunately, our three players at the WC will all be here next year (or they won't be on the transfer list, at least), so in that regards by the middle of July Silva will have seen all the others in training.

Still have to sell 10 players apparently before we sign anyone zzz... Surely we could mix it up a bit. Don´t have to get every single dud off the books before we make a move. Get Lonzano in before his value sky rockets.
Agreed, Get player in who take up the places of the ones we want shut off. Publicly declare they are 1st choice and let the others spit their dummies and request a transfer.

Why would they request a transfer and loss a percentage of the transfer fee??

They will be told by there agents to sit tight, they are a decent wage which they might not get at another club.

The agents will be rubbing there hands joyfully at this situation.

Finally going left-back hunting or seeing how good Robinson is.

--------------

“We have a fantastic left-back in our squad," Silva told the ECHO.

"Leighton will give fantastic things and do good things for us in the future but we will try.

“We have some young players to analyse as well and see what we will do – whether we work with our young players or do something in the market."

Motivation must be hard for a manager, once a player has made it onto a sweet deal in the premiership what else is there ? You have to get characters who are really desperate to win - and they are likely to want to go to already established winning clubs to play with other winning players.

It's interesting to consider our 'winners' over recent years - Coleman, Cahill, Arteta, Neville, Rooney, Baines come to mind. They aren't necessarily the silkiest players - I think Alex Ferguson understood that well. So, 2 from lower leagues, 2 who needed a new start and two from our youth team.

I'm sure Koeman thought he was getting that from Williams, Gylfi and Klaasen but he wasn't a good judge.

I still have hope for Gylfi though.
