Oh I realise I'm old fashioned about defending as a whole, never mind just FBs not defending like defenders.

One things for sure though: we need to address this position. Baines is said to be ok by Koeman tonight. We'll see. He looked injured to me and if he does miss matches to come s
It'll underline the mistake made letting Oviedo go.

Regardless, Baines is the past. We need a new LB next season.

Letting Oviedo go was anything but a mistake, we got money for him and he isnt good enough to replace Baines anyway as a stop gap until the end of the season, either way confident Walsh and Koeman can carry on the excellent work they have done so far and will bring in a quality LB in the summer

....I fear the physicality of this league has caught up with Baines as it does with a number of small framed players. For a while now he's looked fragile which made the decision to send Galloway on loan seem puzzling. I can only think RK isn't a fan of Galloway.

I know what you mean about full backs defending but in the modern game getting forward is pivotal. We had Hibbert as an out and out defender for many years but so much more is needed now. Young Sessignon looks a good size and athletic enough to be effective at both ends of the pitch.

I think RK possibly saw Galloway more as a centre back. With the emergence of holgate in pre- season he probably thought sending Galloway out on loan to another Premiership club, would give the lad some premier league experience. However the loan has been a disaster, his inability to get selected has 'stalled' his career and upon his return to Everton he will probably have fell even further down the pecking order.

Won't argue that we need to add a left back in the summer Dave, even if Baines retains the starting spot then at his age and habit of picking a fair few knocks up, then he's unlikely to be able to play much over 30 games in what's hopefully a 50+ game season upcoming.

As for Oviedo mate. He just wasn't good enough and to get the fee we received was shrewd and good business, rather see us try a academy lad there or go to a back three than play someone whose not up to mustard.

We have to upgrade now. I think most people will now accept that Baines has to be benched permanently. If he is still starting next season we can forget a decent season.

I'd say him being benched is unlikely, - being rotated, or having a player who can provide a serious competition - yup can see that.

Honestly, a lot will depend on who we bring in for the left centre back spot as well, IF we brought in a player of the calibre of VVd for example then it gives Baines a whole lot less defensive responsibility and allows him to play to his strengths - which is delvering a bloody good ball still, similarly - if we brought in someone who can interlink a lot better than Mirallas does then again it would play to his strengths.

Only the summer and what we do transfer wise will show that though, looks like we won't switch to a back 3 on a permanent basis on initial evaluation though - though it's purely gueswork.

Ideally we look to sign someone who gives us what Baines did at his peak

We can't be purchasing players and organising our defence to accommodate Baines.

He's had his day. He's a shadow of the player he was. We've seen Koeman make unsentimental decisions. He has to be consistent and make sure we start next season with someone like Bertrand.

Let's stop beating about the bush here and place aside squabbles about Baines and the politics of Baines. He isn't what we require. He has to make way for his successor. Not share the job with his successor, step aside for his successor.

I never said we should buy players to accomodate Baines mate, i just stated that depending on who we buy and the type of player in certain positions then it will have an influence on Baines effectiveness and thus importance in the team going forward in time

It comes down to transfer priorities and how much we have ultimately, and ofc who we can attract.

But if i had the choice of Baines with a young promising player to step in AND thatmeant adding a absolute top quality player at cb like VVD for example then i'd take that over bringing in just a decent level cb and taking in a good left back at his peak

Ideally we do both, but it's not gonna be possible to fix ALL areas at the same time during the summer ofc

The fact that you think "most people accept baines has to be benched" shows how little you know. He's still a decent LB and him being selected next season does not mean will will not have a decent season

Will watch this Keane from Burnley today. He's likely to have lots to do, and not necessarily against a convential centre forward. As a pure stopper and 'clearer of lines' he looks to have something. But haven't really seen him against tricky forwards (apart from against Arsenal at the Emirates when he did well). Koeman said he's the type we're looking at, and he might be more attainable than Van Dijk.
Trouble is, if he does really well today the RS might go for him too!

So important positions to fill
CB
LB
Attacking player/striker
Winger
I'd go with that, and if funds would stretch, maybe a keeper.
The left back one is interesting. Baines still has that quality in terms of his passing and experience. But, he sometimes struggles against pure pace. Personally, I think he has one more season at this level in him though. So do we get someone who'll wait for a season, or to go straight in ahead of Baines?

We need another striker who can play off Rom as well as up top on their own if Rom gets a knock/needs a rest next season.

I still think Mertens is that man, stacks of experience in Europe and for Belgium, scores a crazy amount of goals and would fit well with Lukaku.
