Not surprised if we are looking at Maguire as an option - think he is a decent player and just because we have money it doesn't mean that there are not relative bargains for us to go after. Don't imagine that Maguire is our first choice ch - still imagine that we want VVD and Keane but if dont get either/or wouldnt surprise me if he is the next one to look at as he has premier league experience. Distribution isn't great but would be a decent long term replacement for Williams as the no-nonsense leader type of defender with a ball playing centre half taking over from Jags/FM a la VVD next to him or as part of a three.

The backline needs completely gutting.

Apart from Coleman I wouldn't retain anyone else...and I include the GK in this in terms of finding a new #1.

If any one of Williams, Baines, Jagielka, Mori are automatic starters next season I'd consider it a failure to progress.

But if that lad from Hull is a starter then it;s the wrong way of going about it.

You'd gut the whole of the 4th best defence in the league? All in one window? The only one you'd keep is the one that won't be playing for another year and might not actually come back the same player as before?

Not my first choice but McGuire is very comfortable on the ball.

Fully agree, I've seen him make some great runs forward and he doesn't get a nosebleed like Williams, looks comfortable.
I've liked him since his early Sheff Utd days, he was way too good for them, I'm still not sure he's a top 6 player though.
I think the fact he looks and built more like an old fashioned centre half rather than the modern day centre half, puts people off and he is mis-judged.

Sorry, but McGuire is not the type of player to push us on, at all.
Neither was a injury prone centre half from the championship who had never played a top flight game in their career.

Lescott didn't do too badly did he stepping up?

Or defensive midfielder/utility player Jagielka who got pushed into defence as we had no-one else to do it at the time?

or some unknown irish player we signed for only 60 grand....

You get the point, don't rule a player out.

Thats why Davek is stuck on a forum lambasting Koeman and not in the actual hot seat! Defenses need stability, trying to start the season with a brand new back 5 would be madness. I'd imagine we'll 1 first choice centre back who'll partner Williams at the start of the season, any other defenders signed will be to provie back up or competition but I'd be surpirsed if any were automatic first choices with the excetpion of a replacement for Coleman until he is fit.

so why did he go back to belgium for the birth of his second? Was it because they wanted the kid to be born belgian? Or was the kid born in britain so they were just flying back to belgium to introduce him/her to the family. It's something i've never actually thought about with footballers playing in a foreign league.

I believe to keep the nationality of the baby Belgian, if born in England the baby would be English

But given I am a English person living in Australia with only an Australian passport, with Australian kids that is up for debate

That was while we was aiming for top 8, or even just to stay in the prem. Things have changed.

I like Williams he does the dirty work well, he just needs someone next to him with pace otherwise we defend too deep, But he will be in Jags role this time next season as a squad player
Jags will be gone in the summer am sure of that
Baines is deffo on the decline but still has a lot you offer for at least another season.

We need a keeper but who?? although Joel has been brilliant since his return to the team..
Baines and Jagielka: stick a fork in those two, they're done. They are the players of two managers ago and not fit for purpose. Get shut.

Williams: I have to hold my hand up here and say I got this one dreadfully wrong. I thought he was exactly what we need, given his leadership qualities. I dont see that at Everton, and I now see how limited his game is close up.

Mori: I like the player. He has something that maybe needs a shift elsewhere to bring out. A move to a mid-table Spanish club would possibly suit.

Coleman: retain. A very good competitor and has potency in him up front. Should be made captain even in his rehabilitation period to underline he's very much still in the plan.

Even perspective here, Lescott went to a title winning team, Jags was courted by a top 4 team, coleman i haven't got a clue why a higher club has never come in for him in all honesty (not that i am complaining about that), Baines in his prime was the best in the league etc.

My point is really, they were just good signings and if we suddenly challenged for the league during that period then we would have because of them rather than in spite of them if that makes sense. I know very little of Maguire/Gibson/Keane/Robertson/Cook or any other of these english defenders we are in for. I can't say which are good and which aren't, but to be honest i wouldn't rule any of them out before they pulled on a blue shirt either because you never know if they will become key players for us. Jags for example was signed as a DM for example, yet has been mainstay for years at the back.

Thats all well and good mate, but we was skint back then really.

And we will sign these type of players....but we really NEED to think bigger, if we want to become bigger.

Now, signing McGuire would be nice....if we also signed Virgil from Southampton. Otherwise, its just more of the same and its the reason we wont push on to that next level.

Coleman was a lucky one, and no doubt we could do the same again. But would you go and look in the Irish league for a starting right back to challeng the CL ???

Im not writting these players off, I just think we need better.

An attitude change is needed, from all of us.
