I have to agree with this. Sort of.

Yeah, spending wisely has its' place, but to send a statement you've got to show a willingness to spend to win.

If we just basically spend the Lukaku money this window, even if it makes us stronger as a unit it'd still be perceived as "smart spending" rather than actual ambition.

For me, you have a statement window when you keep all your best talent and spend big on top.

Selling your best to fund spending is same old same old.

It just is.

Err... I didn't mention net spend. We've bought a lot of players in a short space of time and sold a very expensive player. Practically impossible for us to have significant net spend for the summer.

...yeah, there's always some excuse.

That's why nothing has changed.

Spend what comes in and spend £50M on top...we are seeing almost a complete gutting of last season's team upfront and we desperatley need other positions strengthened.

Wage bill has gone up steadily over the past few seasons. It will again this season. There are plenty going off the wage bill too, dont forget.

The issue is, they're going off mostly at the bottom end of the wage bill, and coming in mainly at the top end.

The issue is, they're going off mostly at the bottom end of the wage bill, and coming in mainly at the top end.

Lukaku, Barkley, McCarthy...they'll all leave and a large amount of wages will be saved.

Who are the big earners coming beside Rooney? Maybe one other forward will command a hefty fee.

As said, it'll be more than last season. But that's in line with what's been happening anyway. It's no indicator that we've shifted gear.
