You think Baines is a better bet than Robertson at this stage of their careers? Pffft! You cant have watched either last season then.

Baines is an utter liability now. It's sentiment that's fastening him onto a starting spot. I bet he cant believe his luck he's still here in that role when just two seasons or so ago he couldn't hold down his place.

Handy rule of thumb with our ambitions: if Baines starts games we've accepted the mediocre status allotted to us.

You can't have a go at koeman for hanging barkley ... an evertonian ... out to dry then claim he's only picking baines because of sentiment ... your talking pooh..., AGAIN !

Baines cant close down, head a ball, or cross a ball. We start with a disadvantage straight away when he he's named in the XI to start.

...I think it's unfair to say "he can't cross a ball", Dave. He's past his best and we all accept the need for a longe term replacement but he's still a magician with the ball at his feet and RK said he's different class in possession sessions. I was at Hull last season when the cross he delivered for Barkley's header was a great moment for me. It wasn't just the quality of the delivery but the pause and look up just before he picked Barkley out.

Yet in a side that enjoyed far more possession thus less defensive duties needed, Baines made more blocks (closing down), won more aerial duels (head a ball) and had much greater number and success rate with crossing (or cross a ball) than Robertson did mate.

Care to explain how he managed that and why we should have gotten Robertson who is clearly inferior to Baines in all 3 of those areas?
Yes. It didn't happen...as posted above.

Magician?!

I lost count how many times in the last two seasons this 'magician' couldn't conjur up a cross that beat the first line of defence.

Going to disagree mate his crossing has gone badly downhill, especially in comparison to what it use to be.

Are you talking about defender with most assists from crosses in "history of PL" Leighton Baines?

Having looked at the stats he now has almost double the assists of Gary Neville and Ashley Cole who played in the most dominant teams of their eras that scored 50% more goals than Everton and had Van Nistelrooy / Drogba to aim at rather than Anichebe.
History? No. I'm talking about the present. If you think Baines is worth a starting place in a team looking to press for a CL spot then you're very welcome to that p.o.v. - I just happen to think it's pure sentiment and not based on anything like realistic assessment of form.

I suspect there be a big surge in stat comparison right now reading this!

Last season average per game:

Tackles won :
Baines 1.56 Robertson 1.09

Blocks made:
Baines 0.19 Robertson 0.45

Clearances made:
Baines 2.59 Robertson 2.88

Interceptions:
Baines 1.37 Robertson 1.79

Aerial Duels Won:
Baines 40.35 Robertson 47.62

Squawka.

...so the answer to your question is 'everything defensively except tackles won'.
That said it's completely askew to look at defence achievements when Robertson would have had at least double the amount of opportunities to defend than baines, there were games we dominated from start to finish; Hull got battered week in week out so no real reflection here save to say Baines would have better stats if he played at Hull last season; thankfully he was in a much better team.

It's just an odd one because he couldn't get in the first team squad so I should of expanded my question to looking at their reserve/under 23's. His manager has said he couldn't play him because there isn't enough quality around him, is that not an oxymoron?
Excuse my ignorance I'm just curious how we've evaluated him now, can't really pay much to school boy level....I still have nightmares about how excited I got when we got George Green!

...these signings are low risk and potentially high reward. It was understandable the fans got excited with George Green because it was a rarity for us to delve in that market but now it's a strategy to pick up some of the best young talent on the planet. Exciting times.

Robertson aside as I actually think you know he's not really that good who would you want Dave?

..I understand where you coming from in respect of Baines at the present time but it is still magical how he finds a pass in the tightest of situation. The dressing room needs the right balance and right characters as well as the right players and I think RK still feels he has a lot to offer.

That's a fair point. However I think he's also a better bet surging forward than Baines....chances to do that with Hull might have been limited but at Liverpool he'd have ample opportunity.

I think you read my mood there, i am getting more excited by what Unsworth is putting together than I should be!
