Marcelo defensive stats

Tackles per game: 1.5
Interceptions: 1.3
Clearances: 0.9
Blocks 0.1

Robertson is a better left back than Marcelo, by far.

Nothing to do with poorer teams having higher volumes of defensive work.
What's that got to do with a direct comparison of two PL LBs?

Nothing.

..I understand where you coming from in respect of Baines at the present time but it is still magical how he finds a pass in the tightest of situation. The dressing room needs the right balance and right characters as well as the right players and I think RK still feels he has a lot to offer.
He knows he'll start kicking up a stink and is keeping him onside.

That seems obvious to me...as much as his diminishing powers are obvious.

That's a fair point. However I think he's also a better bet surging forward than Baines....chances to do that with Hull might have been limited but at Liverpool he'd have ample opportunity.
I can only repeat with a better midfield and a forward who can control the ball I expect Baines to improve again in that aspect. He's technically proficient, he views the pitch well (as from full back you should) he really can pick consistent probing passes.

Barkley doesn't go cry arseing to the local press or agitating in the squad.
Bainsey>Martinez. Just let the love die my friend.
Baines needs phasing out this season. I like Childwell, and didn't see enough of Robertson- so I'll take your word on it- but we ain't competing against a CL team who pay better wages and have no actual footballers at LB.

I've stated for ages that Robertosn was a better bet than Baines.

My preferred choice is Bertrand.
I know but I meant in terms of really improving us, I have to agree with Bertrand I really do like him as the flying fullback to compliment Seamus when (fingers crossed) is back.

Moreno had ample opportunities surging forward- didn't make him a good defender. Think he will get dominated aerially and physically. Good signing for a mid table to top 7 team.

I agree we need a new LB but Robertson really isn't that good yet.
In fairness, I don't think he will be the long term answer. However for the price £8m, he would have provided good cover for Baines whilst we see whether either Connolly or Robinson develop into top players. Baines looking pretty sluggish at the moment in pre-season. Still brings a lot to the team but I think his marauding days are behind him. Or at best, he won't be able to do it as often which makes a back up even more important.

Ben Davies at Spurs would be a good choice, as mentioned elsewhere on GOT, he knows Ashley's game, can play LB or CB if needed. He is second choice behind Rose, when he comes back. IMO he could be first choice LB with us. If we can do a deal involving Ross , that would be good or a stand alone bid may be worth our while.

..I think that's a long way off reality. I doubt very much that RK feels he needs to keep Baines onside.

Koeman ain't going to be influenced by any individual player. He is his own man, has his own ideas, and will quite happily boot someone out if he no longer thinks they are up to the mark.

Since 2009/10 season

Ryan Bertrand - 11 assists in 149 games - 0.07 assists per game
Leighton Baines - 47 assists in 266 games - 0.18 assists per game
