This back-up thing is a load of nonsense.

Players should have confidence in their own ability and welcome competition.

Any player even vaguely concerned in that respect only has to look at DCL's playing record to know they are most likely going to get plenty of playing time regardless.

If the club are approaching players on the basis they'll be a backup, it would be crazy.

It's true we can't rely on him, but I very much doubt that we can afford a striker as good or better than him. So we have to get a player who can provide cover/push for his place.

But if fit DCL plays unless the other guy is in better form.
Yes. Of the strikers we are linked with, only Beto and Ekitike are fit for purpose. If we don't land either of them then we have to accept that the plan is to have Maupay and Chermiti as back up to DCL. Danjuma in a pinch.

Think that's where the change of thinking comes in mate. I feel we need in the circumstances to buy a striker who can come in and hit the ground running as a main striker. Unless Dyche and team know something we don't about DCL's imminent full recovery from all injuries, we probably need to be considering DCL as the backup (when fit).

The new striker would then need to see himself as the main striker and given a run.

I know I’m giving the club too much credit here but..

They may know that selling Onana is a possibility if a high enough bid comes in, so they are hanging fire on a striker until we know for sure what market we are shopping in.

I doubt it, but it’s possible.

That relied on Utd and it seems they are done with spending for now unless they move players on and neither Maguire or McTominey seem in any hurry to leave.

I think it’s a possible explanation but only if we believe an Onana bid is highly likely. The Gnonto bid shows there is some money there so if we really fancied Daka / Adams or someone in that range we could’ve done it by now.

Fact they haven’t suggests to me that hopefully one way or another they hope to do something a bit better, and there would be no point panic buying an Adams type if you think there could be big money in before the deadline. But like you say maybe that’s giving too much credit.

You could be into something there...for sure if you have 50 millions plus budget vs nothing then there is a huge difference on possible targets. However, I think we are reaching a point now that selling onana wouldn't be advisable as very late in the window. Couple of weeks left and bearing in mind how slow we are to get deals over the line...
