Summer transfer window 2023

If we keep Tom Cannon at the club next season, which I think we should, then we need to sign one additional striker as well as DCL.

We need to bring in some creativity and I think that will be a priority. Last year we failed with Gibbs-White and Kudus and we certainly paid the price for that.

On a short cheap deal I wouldn't be against it. Very raw despite his age with barely any experience in european football. I think for sure though that he would be a better option than maupay...had decent stats everywhere he has been.
Not for me mate hes 29 and never played anywhere if thats the level of our ambition/budget then its gonna be a long season. Links like that are making me think Weghorst is a better option and thats not good.

Honestly think there's some dramatic tempering of expectation levels required here

Do I think Weghorst would change our fortunes dramatically? No

Do I think he's better than Maupay or Simms? Yes

Would I be happy if he were the only striker we signed? No

But we have to bring in (probably) a reserve keeper, a left back, a centre back, at least one centre mid, a wide player and a couple of strikers this summer on a budget of next-to-nothing

There's going to have to be some compromise along the way - for instance, we don't need to sign two strikers who are as good as or better than DCL - one of them just needs to be better than Maupay/Simms and the other needs to be DCL level.

The main arguments I'm seeing against Weghorst is his record in the PL - he's scored twice and assisted 4 times in 37 appearances in the PL (although it works out at about 25 full games), not great numbers for a striker, but he played in midfield a fair bit for United at times and, for all he misfired in front of goal, he does have some attributes which are useful - there's a YouTube video somewhere in this thread of his highlights from one game which give you an idea about what he brings to the table.

If he were a loan and coming in alongside another striker, I could see the logic in the move. We will not be spending money on every player we need as we don't have it, so loans and frees are going to be important this summer. Having said all that, I would be surprised to see Burnley loan him out again, so it sort of becomes a moot point as I wouldn't want us spending actual money on a 30 year old

That's a very long post to defend the signing of a truly woeful player.

Why are we where we are right now? It's because we keep signing shabite players like wout weghorst, players who just aren't remotely good enough to play consistently at this level.

Is he better than maupray and Simms? Based on what? They are all crap.

"Temper our expectations" you need to up yours because we'll be right back here again next season signing dross like this.

Id like us to keep Cannon as an option off the bench too but reports yesterday were suggesting hes going back to Preston. Dunno how true that is like.

Someone showed me some stats the other day that indicated he was the tenth most similar player to Benzema across Europe's top leagues in terms of style of play.

I mean, come on

Stats are only useful with context, and applied to the right categories of how a team plays.

I work in Data myself.

They can be utterly useless with no basis or context or application.

I'd be wanting one no.9 + another who can play wide or upfront, similar to richarlison

Just had a brief look at that Olungas record/career. that link is definitely a wind up. Never scored anywhere except farmers and shepherds leagues. Oh apparently one season in la liga and scored 3 in 14.

Does every team in the Premier League get linked to, and negotiate with, so many players? I feel like a lot of teams just get a guy quickly and quietly while Everton has an endless process that plays out in articles and on social media.

Simms was literally better this year!

Precisely, data (Stats) with no context is meaningless, Data with context is information.

It is this misunderstanding and frankly, misuse, of stats and data that winds me up mostly about the stats they use these days to try and explain a game or sequence that can only really be understood, or is at all useful as part of the wider game.
