He was, and at the time it was widely reported that Emery wanted to sign Zaha instead

A lot of teams wanted him though, yeah it was only really 1 glorious breakout season for him, but if Arsenal hadn't jumped for his signing when they did there was a queue waiting. A Painful gamble in the end, but he certainly looked a talent at the time.
