Well that's the big difference isn't it? Where is our Balogun? Get these players before they cost north of 30m. Moise Kean seemed like a perfect deal for us too, at that age you never know how they will turn out. I suppose you can say that for any player at any age though.
Maybe we don't have the cash anymore but early on we seemed to be spending large amounts on 'proven' players like Schneiderlin, Bolasie, Klaasen, Iwobi, Gomes, Mina, Digne, Sigs, Keane, Tosun, Walcott - but even with those 'proven' players the hit rate was poor.

However, no doubt every club is trying to maximise their chances of getting reasonably priced first team potential in youth - demand must be high, their price goes up (Onana wasn't cheap) and we aren't the most attractive prospect at times.

In some ways our most successful strategy has been spending good amounts on youth that isn't close to the first team yet - like Stones, DCL, Branthwaite, even Simms - but something has broken there now - perhaps impatience ?

Practically, we do need first team players that can keep us in the PL - now.

Good points.

Trying to cover the amount of positions we need on a tight budget is never an easy ask.

I would never understimate how difficult it is. If we set the bar (depressingly) at say a final league position of 13th/14th and not being embroiled in nail-biting for the last 8 games, can we manoeuvre enough in the market over the next 8 weeks to bring that about?

Who knows ultimately, but if targeted business is done, we have a good chance I think. A lot of players have left / are leaving, but as we know, most of them produced very little tangible in terms of winning points, if they played at all.

I'm looking for us to gain 10 points on last season, although a manager should never aim that low from the start. If we could find two strikers that between them got 20 goals, then our prospects look immeasurably better. Part of me thinks thats a very doable task, even on a budget, and another part thinks it isn't.

Whatever happens, we need to get our recruitment right, not just right, but the cohort of signings we do end up with need to do better than expected, individually and collectively, and thats a big ask.

I still remain optimistic though, based almost entirely on the notion that it really shouldn't be difficult to "replace" most of what've we lost, when a lot of those players contributed almost nothing to the bottom line. Even getting the signings to be consistently fit would represent a big step forward.

Yeah, there's undeniably a lot of potential there, but in the situation we find ourselves in I'd be surprised if we spent huge money on a player who may not start
Exactly. If we had buckets of cash, you’d expect us to be paying for good prospects alongside more experienced players but, given our current desperate situation, we can only afford to bring in players with substantial fees if they’re an immediate starter. And the reality is we’ll be looking for those immediate starters on the cheap/loan.

Seeing a few people say they want a new 10/Central Attacking Midfielder, which is fine as everyone's entitled to their opinion, but we still have Doucoure for another year now, I don't get what's wrong with him for the time being?

Dyche is the first manager who has actually come in and played him in his preferred and best position since Benitez, which is slightly behind the striker, and it's worked out brilliantly, no?

Since Dyche's arrival, Doucoure's scored 5 goals and registered 2 assists in just 15 games and 1307 minutes - a goal contribution every 186 minutes. Mac Allister who's just signed for the red s***e for comparisons averaged a goal contribution every 220 minutes last season in all comps! If he hadn't have done what he did in the Spurs game, you could argue his numbers would have been even better! I definitely think we're okay in midfield for now.

and we’re is the pace? oh wait we’re selling it to the arab league

Gray might have pace, but he does nothing with it, mate. Probably the most frustratingly inconsistent player in the squad. Produces moments of magic 2, maybe 3 times a season - and that's it. Gordon was another one with pace, and he was kack as well. Might as well sign Usain Bolt haha.

I think we need someone as competition for doucoure - he’s the only player we have who can play that role in dyche’s team. I’d love someone like Billing but imagine he’d cost too much.

Yes, my optimism, shaky as it is, is based on the surely what we bring in can't be worse than what we let go model. It would be good, though, if we brought in new signings that had potential for growth, players who will be with us in 24/25 and be better for it. Stop gap signings may get us slightly up the table but I really don't want us to be in this position next year

Competition for him would make a lot of sense, especially if it was someone young and upcoming who wouldn't cost a bomb. Probably would need cover for him tbf as well because the 3 games we didn't have Doucoure under Dyche were United away, Fulham at home and Palace away - we scored once and conceded 5 goals, losing 2 and drawing 1. Lose Doucoure to injury or suspension this season and you could argue we'd be knackered.

Like him or hate him there’s no denying he was crucial to that Dyche system.

100%, mate. I'd also love Billing as you said previously, my 10 year old brother is obsessed with him as well. Tall, good in the air, strong, fast, athletic, great feet, can carry the ball and be direct, scores and gets assists, too. Just turned 27 like, so he's not the youngest, but that doesn't change the fact that's he's quality.

I also don't think it's totally beyond the realms of possibility that Dyche has a look at Alli and fancies his chances at getting a tune out of him

I think he'd be foolish to try it and the finances might ultimately prove a stumbling block unless we can renegotiate with Spurs, but what Dyche said about him the other month made me think he wants to at least take a look at him. Plus, you have to take it with an industrial load of salt, but the lad at Glastonbury on Twitter who posted a selfie with Dyche said that he fancied getting the best out of Dele (I know, I know)
