Latest article in athletic basically confirms we are open to offers for all players, youth and senior squads, and will sell at right price. Sound strategy when you can re-invest it all back in to playing squad, but with our financial situation that’s not going to happen.

If we were as skint as some people are making out then we wouldn’t be holding on to Pickford, who became our highest earning player just a few months ago.

I’m hoping that we are just trying to be sensible in getting rid of our useless players before we start adding to our squad.
Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

If Pickford has had a rise of £20k, that’s straight out of the Mina wages (£120k pw), still leaving us £100k a week better off.

Not to mention the wages of Coady gone, Townsend gone, Simms gone etc etc.

Hope so, and could well be the case. But does look like selling the players that might be good in 2 years in order to cobble together enough coppers to buy one or two that are good right now. Depressing and very short-term, but probably a positive that they have recognised that it’s going to be another rough season, so diverting what little funds we are willing/able to spend into just getting some breathing space this season. Worry about the future just before it happens.

I do worry about the “BMD will sort out all finances due to commercial income etc” idea. The increased gate receipts (non corporate) will probably cover just the salary, not the amortisation, of a couple of half decent players each year. If we randomly get £5million a year for scoreboard sponsorship, that ALL goes to someone like Doucoure.

The outgoings are massive for all clubs, and there isn’t a massive pot of gold for unpopular and recently vilified clubs (with a habit of embarrassing themself publicly at board level) to tap into just because the ground is ultra sexy. We aren’t getting £100million a year for the “Microsoft North Stand”, and won’t be seeing Apple on the sleeve of the shirts.

Sunderland after Tom Cannon for £3m, I think that’s cheap, he did well on loan last year.

We aren't skint.. we have regulation issues.. with a hearing coming up in a few months we can't go gung ho in this window.. come the hearing we can say "we have regulated our spending and become compliant no need for punishment".
Financial regulations doing their job keeping the rich at the top..United can spend far in excess of most teams despite being almost 600 million in debt.

Needs must, he will be a one year stop gap who can cover multiple positions.

At the end of the season when Villa went on a run winning games he was starting at rightback and looked solid.
I understand that argument , if we were a well funded team competing in or around mid table and needing an experienced stop gap it would make better sense.
But we are a bottom of the table club facing our third year of battling for survival, with severe financial restrictions on our squad. In that context every penny counts and every purchase has to able to contribute throughout the season.
I understand the logic , but I’m not sure a 38year old represents value for money , even with a nice collection of of medals .

Right price seems to mean first offer any any muppet throws our way.
