Summer transfer window 2023

Ever since we abandoned our strategy of finding cheap players in the lower leagues and abroad and started paying massive money for “proven” Premier League players we’ve just got worse and worse and worse.
Our strategy at that time - I assume we're talking Moyes - did involve buying PL proven players a large proportion of the time though. We supplemented it with others but i'd imagine the bulk of the players he signed already had PL experience. Even some of the main ones that people use as examples of him signing from 'lower leagues' are Baines and Jagielka who were both most recently playing PL football when we signed them. I can only think of Cahill and Lescott who came from the football league with no PL experience (discounting kids). The difference hasn't really been where we've signed the players from or their ages or anything, it's just that we often found value in the market then and we haven't often done that very often recently, no matter where we're signing people from.

We never really abandoned it - those players just got a lot more expensive.

Look at Lookman, Godfrey... even what the likes of Blackburn wanted for Ben Brereton or Coventry for Gyökeres.

Realistically, what are the odds we are going to make significant signings. I know some big earners will be off, but with us being under investigation and an independent panel reviewing our finances, will there be money to buy?

Lookman was cheap

Point was it was a record fee for a player in League One. Think it doubled the previous record fee with Dele Alli.

Fees are generally inflated but the fees now in the lower leagues arent as cheap (and lower risk) as they used to be.

Yeah but 25m is now the same as 5mill was when we were picking up lescott and jags and baines.

First rule of a forward these days is to make the ball stick in the opponents half while support arrives. That is why maupay has been on a hiding to nothing and it’s why Dcl is key for us.
DCL really isn’t that great at holding the ball up, but he’s the best of a really bad bunch at Everton

Not sure it was just PL players - Klaasen, Mina, Gomes, Gbamin, Digne were expensive players that had sort of proven themselves elsewhere.

We have overpaid for experience - and even potential.

Yeah right? Missed the Brighton game did you?
It is his best attibute. Winning headers getting his body in front of defenders, challenging so that there is a second ball.
For the first hour or so in the Brighton match he played the perfect target man game game. He obviously tired after though
