Sunderland afc

I've always considered Sunderland's support to be good, especially at home, although in the final few years of being in the PL it's clear they gave away large amounts of free tickets to boost their crowds.

But something I have noticed about them is this 'pat eachother on the back' attitude they have about their support. Seems to be a North East thing. Had a look at their forum and there is a topic about their fans, and if anyone dares to criticise them or suggest they're not a cut above everyone else they get dismissed as a Newcastle fan lol.

The truth is, their away support has shown themselves this season to be very similar to a lot of clubs who they think they are head and shoulders above. Don't get me wrong, they're going through absolute turmoil as a fanbase and I appreciate they would get lower turnouts because of it but that is also true of many other clubs who go down and their support starts to reduce - Bolton, Blackburn, Portsmouth, the Sheffield clubs etc. They have had numerous sub 1K away supports this season which doesn't set them apart from the Norwich's and Blackburn Rovers types. Some are also claiming they've been through worse than the Sheffield clubs in the last 10 years which is a strange view.

You know mate, I've never noticed that. But, you're not the first person to mention the whole 'pat each other on the back' thing as @orly has mentioned it too. So, you both can't be wrong, I've just never seen it. Although, I do concede, I am biased.

I wouldn't take too much notice on the Sunderland forum (If that's where you visit - I'm assuming you're on about the RTG forum?). There are some utter idiots on there. There's also this unwritten, long-winded joke when any outsiders are greeted with a mature 'Fu** off welcome greeting' which is getting a bit stale and dull. In our defence, the board is littered with Newcastle/Boro fans who spend a good 15/20 minutes setting up an account on a Sunderland forum and then proceed to attempt to wind people up and mock us. So, there's a bit of paranoia now, where genuine Sunderland fans are sometimes deemed 'Mags' just because they have negative opinions. There must be about 15-20+ accounts of people who openly admit to being Newcastle fans, with a further 10/15 who deny being Newcastle fans but give themselves away by trying to be overly convincing 'I love Sunderland 4 eva' username for example lol :dodgy: So, that would probably explain why our forum looks like a mad house, it's poorly run, Mods don't ban Newcastle fans who are blatantly only on to get a reaction/wind people up, so it just turns into full-on circus on a weekly basis, with insults tossed around on an hourly basis. I suppose the mods benefit from the increase of traffic the 'outsiders' bring.

I know I'm a little bit of a hypocrite as I'm on your forum, but I'd like to think I make a decent contribution (others may disagree!) and have no interest in winding people up or any other juvenile stuff like that.

I wouldn't necessarily agree that we've had it worse than the Sheffield teams mind. (Although we're definitely going down this year). They've been in league 1 in recent years whilst we've had 10 years in the Premiership.

I think we're feeling a bit sorry for ourselves at the moment. But, you've got to have a bit of perspective. For example, Hartlepool, recently just dropped to the Blue Square Premiership and facing the agonizing prospect of liquidation, which seems imminent.

Eventually, we'll recover and come back. Football is swings and roundabouts, but I dread to think how bad things are about to get if we drop to league 1.

With looking league one bound, karma is certainly coming to bite the mackems on the arse considering how much they rubbed it in during Newcastle's two recent relegations.

And I'm someone with little time for the 'toon army'.

Good post, and you've kept calm under some testing moments on this thread lol.

Think you're in serious trouble now though unfortunately, and don't see you getting out of it. Hopefully you will bounce straight back up though and your fans can witness some wins and a feel good factor again, even if it is way further down than you want to be.

And i still wouldn't have changed it for the world. Not only did they go down but we stayed up at their expense. Was worth all the karma coming our way for me. Was as good a winning something (well i guess as never actually seen us win anything)
