Today sees the launch of a new daily series called:

'The A-Z of useless facts about small towns in the UK'

We will kick off with Abingdon-on-Thames.

Abingdon-on-Thames
is a historic market town in Oxfordshire.

The town was occupied by the Romans and a Roman defensive enclosure lies beneath the town centre.

Famous stuff to come out of Abingdon-on-Thames include 'Old Speckled Hen' (which has since moved to Bury St-Edmunds) and 'Radiohead'.

Football?

Two non-league teams. Abingdon United FC and Abingdon Town FC.

Log on tomorrow for useless facts about our next town on the A-Z list. Accrington.
Abingdon, Virginia is a lovely town in a lovely spot, btw. Worth a stop if you're ever in the neighborhood.

Good morning and welcome to the second episode of 'The A-Z of useless facts about small towns in the UK'.

In today's episode, we look at the town of Accrington.

Accrington is located in Lancashire, close to its more esteemed neighbours, Blackburn and Burnley. (More on them in later episodes)

Accrington was a center of the cotton and textile industries and is known for producing the hardest and densest bricks in the world - "The Accrington NORI" which were used in the construction of famous buildings such as the Empire State Building and for the foundations of the Blackpool tower.

Today, Accrington is known for the Haworth Art Gallery which holds Europe's largest collection of Tiffany glass.

Did you know that Accrington covers two townships that were established in 1507 after disafforestation? Well those old towns were New Accrington and Old Accrington! These were merged in 1878 with the incorporation of the borough council.

Accrington played a key part in the Industrial Revolution due to it being located on a confluence of streams which made it attractive to industry and a number of mills were built in the town in the mid-18th century which ensured its population expanded from 3,266 in 1811 to its peak of 45,029 in 1911.

David Lloyd is probably the towns most famous son.

Football?

Accrington Stanley (Who are they? I hear you all chortle) play in League One.

Did you know?

Accrington has the unique distinction of having two of its football clubs lost from league football.

That's all for today's episode of 'The A-Z of useless facts about small towns in the UK'. Tune in tomorrow for episode 3, where we will be looking at the town of Acle.

Usually a town has between 1000 and 10,000 people. Anything less is a village etc.

Its very lose though as villages can grow, towns can shrink etc. Something to do with incorporation is involved too.

Towns can have a population far in excess of 10,000. St.Helens & Wigan both have populations over 100,000.

What counts as as a small town @Paris? Population or mentality?
