Happy Christmas one and all and apologies it's late - I got wrapped up in work yesterday so I couldn't give the much needed effort that these posts truly deserve.
So anyway, onto episode 4 and today's festive episode is on the Greater London borough of Acton.
Acton lies 6.1km west of Charing Cross and is located in the Historic County of Middlesex.
Originally an ancient village, Acton was absorbed into London as it expanded. Prehistoric settlement is shown by finds of Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age Burials at Mill Hill Park and Iron Age coins at Bollo Lane.
Today, Acton has a thriving high street lined with pubs which vary in theme and clientele and the recently refurbished "Mount" on Acton High Street hosts a market on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Acton's library, swimming baths and Town Hall are fine examples of Victorian era municipal buildings.
Acton's most famous son is likely to be Pete Townshend, former lead singer of The Who and erstwhile investigator of child pornography.
Football?
Popular but no teams.
Did you know?
Acton means "Oak Farm" or "farm by oak trees"
Thus concludes another episode of "The A-Z of useless facts about small towns in the UK" tune in tomorrow for episode 5, where we will be looking at the town of Adlington.
