Doncaster.

Doncaster is famous for making Sheffield look appealing.

A famous Roman sewer line runs underneath Doncaster that gives Doncaster its unique smell

The name "Doncaster" means "precious balls" in vulgate Latin.

This is a Doncaster city governance meeting:

Having stayed at Doncaster quite a few times for the races, I can concur that this is a true and accurate representation of most Doncaster city centre pubs.

Seen that video a few times, the best bit is just as you think its peaked a funsize Billy Ray Cyrus walks in shot

Swindon is an utterly soul less place where absolute tat that cant be sold elsewhere in the country is sent to be sold to gullible public at inflated prices.

I heard this on the radio once from a retailer and having lived here for far too long I can confirm it is absolutely true. The soul less accusation might be mine though.

Some lovely places nearby it though. There are a lot of lovely roads leading out of Swindon.

Railway museum any good Chris? The one in York is most Boss - Swindon a big railway town back in the day.

When I finally get to Ingerland I want to visit Portwenn and Llanddewi Brefi.

i'd tack on Goodison and the surrounding area, but been on this forum long enough to swerve.

Good morning all, I hope you're all in good Christmas spirit this morning - I'm not, I have to work.

Anyway, today we look at the town of Acle

Acle
is located halfway between Norwich and Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.

In Roman times, Acle was a port at the head of a large estuary named Gariensis. Acle is also mentioned in the Domesday book.

In modern times, a walkway (known locally as Damgate) was built by volunteers and runs from Acle train station (constructed in 1883) to the Boat Dyke. This walkway offers the opportunity to view indigenous flora. There has also been repeated sightings of a Kingfisher - known as Henry - which is said to fly under the disused railway bridge around mid-afternoon. So birdwatchers of this forum feel free to get down there for that time.

Football?

You're 'avin a larf.

Did you know?

Acle's inhabitants have 6 fingers on each hand due to their constant sister and cousin bothering.
Acle means "oaks lea" that is clearing an Oak Forest. During the Tudor period hundreds of oaks were felled to provide timber for Elizabeth I's warships.

Thus concludes another episode of 'The A-Z of useless facts about small towns in the UK' tune in tomorrow, where we will be looking at the town of Acton.

Also a word of warning to those who are seeing posts about towns from different posters to myself. Please be mindful that their facts have not been verified by me so I cannot speak for their accuracy.

Happy Christmas one and all and apologies it's late - I got wrapped up in work yesterday so I couldn't give the much needed effort that these posts truly deserve.

So anyway, onto episode 4 and today's festive episode is on the Greater London borough of Acton.

Acton
lies 6.1km west of Charing Cross and is located in the Historic County of Middlesex.

Originally an ancient village, Acton was absorbed into London as it expanded. Prehistoric settlement is shown by finds of Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age Burials at Mill Hill Park and Iron Age coins at Bollo Lane.

Today, Acton has a thriving high street lined with pubs which vary in theme and clientele and the recently refurbished "Mount" on Acton High Street hosts a market on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Acton's library, swimming baths and Town Hall are fine examples of Victorian era municipal buildings.

Acton's most famous son is likely to be Pete Townshend, former lead singer of The Who and erstwhile investigator of child pornography.

Football?

Popular but no teams.

Did you know?

Acton means "Oak Farm" or "farm by oak trees"

Thus concludes another episode of "The A-Z of useless facts about small towns in the UK" tune in tomorrow for episode 5, where we will be looking at the town of Adlington.
