The Ashes 2013 Thread

Commercial decision. If AUS had followed on the match would now be over, hence England go in and keep the fans there for another couple of days.......

surely cook does not think about how many tickets they sell at lord's when thinking about setting a follow-on. mind you, this series is so easy, i wouldn't be too surprised.

Thoughts on the test so far:

Correct decision to bat on, and on, and on. Why? It is mentally and physically demoralizing for Australia to bowl all day with their toothless attack. Root may well have won the Ashes (if it was ever in doubt) with the way he played that first 100.

Also, there is PLENTY of time to get a win, even after batting an hour tomorrow. If you can't bowl a team out in a little under 2 days, you don't deserve to win.

Another point to consider is the big Australian quicks (and they are big and heavy) have been pounding in all day in those footmarks, it's going to be a nightmare to bat last.

Cricket really is a psychological game, the Aussies will be rock bottom now.

as i have said i think jimmy anderson and swann would get in any in england team ive seen , this team wins test after test , but fuk me its painfull to watch at times, the aussies and am sure mc would agree r poor , very poor

Very poor. Shame the media here are nitpicking the bad decisions rather than inquiring as to whats happened to the National team. Best Aussie team Ive seen would be

A
Hayden
Boon
Ponting
S.Waugh
M. Waugh
Border
Gilchrist
Warne
Lee
Gillespie
McGrath

B
M. Taylor
Slater
Langer
Martyn
Jones
Bevan
Symonds
Healy
McGill
Hughes
McDermott

Rest
Bichel, Fleming, Elliot, Hogg, Blewett, Law, Reiffel, Moody, Lehmann, Katich, D Hussy, M Hussey, Clarke, Lawson, Alderman, Wessels, Ritchie, Matthews, O'Donnell, Marsh, P. Taylor, Kasprowisz.

Going through the team its clear after a raft of retirements between '06 - '09 with Ponting the last to go last year were going to struggle for awhile.

Agree with this all over.

2 days, even 5 sessions should be more than enough. If Australia can defend for that long, then they'll have earnt whatever they get out of the match.

And also good point about a large part of this is psychological - bat a total that's out of reach and the Aussies know that all the best they can do is a draw... that puts extra pressure on them right from the first ball.

People just seem to be in a hurry to get things over with, I blame Twenty20, there's 5 days to use, use them. We only have to draw the series to retain the Ashes as well, that's not really a great result for a series for us, but that's the state of play.

Why play conservatively when a whitewash is on the cards? Have England ever won a series 5-0 against the Aussies? Best chance they'll ever have.

Old Trafford next isn't it? Lash on Jimmy Anderson to get a five for in either innings.

Yeah I mean I don't want to go down the thought process of draw first, win second, and I'm sure Cook's not thinking that.

I guess what I mean is you've got 2 more days to get a result, nearly half the game still to go, there's plenty of time to open some wounds on them before going for the kill.

OT will be more seamer friendly I think (or hope), Finn to get another runout, and go well in tandem with Jimmy.

It will rain for all 5 days at OT mate.. Heat wave or not..

When you have your boot on someone's neck, don't give them time to get out of the situation, just choke the life out of the [Poor language removed].

Anderson and Broad will have a field day at OT, Finn too if he gets back in. I reckon a whitewash is on the cards.

I think that's what they're doing though to use your analogy pal. If they declared last night, there's too much time left.

People say that they'll never get 500, no team has done it, well there's a reason, no team gives another a chance of getting those runs with half the game left, that's the main reason why it hasn't been done. A few years back, I saw SA chase down 400 in the fourth innings against Aussie to win at Perth, they had 2 days to do it, and did it 6 down, they could have chased down 600 if there was a 6th day. You've just got to kill some time (in my opinion).

That's why they should have enforced the follow on. They'd have won today if they did.
