The David Moyes debate

Not these days. Moyes, despite being very adept in the transfer market was only allowed to bring in two speculative loan signings and was forced to sell Arteta et al and got none of the money. Only after selling two strikers, the creative midfielder at the club another squad player and ANOTHER striker was he able to spend a few mill on Jelavic. And what do you know! Another belter of a signing. Donovan, great signing, Gibson - 250k up front and is now nailed in our first XI and Pienaar. Brilliant business. I don't want to sound like I'm kissing ass here but he's like a bloody contortionist: We were on our knees in january, backed right into a corner and those four signings are pretty much solely the reason we've turned it around and now were are 7th and played in a semi final.

You mentioned what Martinez best business with £5m was, well this is just one of many of Moyes'.

I meant with regard to the quality of his signings. With more money for scouts, a club with a better reputation etc. you are more likely to sign better players.

At the end of the day Martinez has dealt with a net transfer spend of -£9m over his tenure and has kept the club in the premier league with a squad many wrote off last season and this season. He's done that while playing good football.

I'm not going to say Martinez would be better overall over a ten year period than Moyes, but anybody saying that he would definitely be worse are nuts.

Some Serious questions now-

1) For the money we've spent do you think we have a strong squad? Strong first team

2) What league position does our squad warrant? Right where it is

3) How many players are we missing to challenge the top 4? Six maybe seven to challenge the strong first team

.............

1. Yes. Core of it.

2. 5th to 8th.

3. 3. One of which is a winger minimum. Preferable two. the other 1 would be back up (fullback back up which Garbutt/Bidwell may be). This doesn't include the incoming Barkley.

i thought we had clarified that the net spend argument is a weak one if you have sold 30 to 40 million pounds worth of players.

Yes
2) What league position does our squad warrant?
On reflection, considering the teams above us, we should be 6th.
3) How many players are we missing to challenge the top 4?
We miss a complete right hand side and a playmaker.

we need a quality right back as well in my opinion

Agreed, its unfair to make a sweeping statement like that, given that the person in question isn't completely inept.

If Moyes left, I'd be more than happy to see him take over, the thought of playing attractive positive football is appealing.

IMO, Moyes has it right half the time. He knows how to play against teams that are expected to batter us, when we're at home. He's the master of keeping it tight and nicking one.

However, when we have to attack, he practically has no clue. Would be good to get a manager who is a happy medium of the two.
