The EU deal

No one in the UK is anti immigration. What they want is more controls on it. To ensure its efficient and meets the needs of the country.

Its this sort of thing that the UK is trying to use the referendum to extract leverage.

My personal view as a business man and a proud British person. I want to stay in. I do want the EU and particularly Angela Merkel to keep its nose out of critical national issues. The UK has an out of control population boom.

Germany and most certainly Anglea Merkel does not dictate policy here in the UK.

This sort of thing does not help:

Germany will accept Brexit if Cameron limits immigration
3 Nov 2014

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned Britain’s David Cameron that putting limits on immigration from other European Union nations would be a “point of no return” that could sharply increase the risk of Britain leaving the EU, a magazine said.

The respected weekly Der Spiegel, citing unnamed sources in Merkel’s office and the German foreign ministry, reported on Sunday (2 November) that Merkel was becoming worried for the first time that a British exit from the EU – dubbed “Brexit” – was a real possibility.

Under growing pressure from the anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP) ahead of a May 2015 national election, Cameron’s Conservatives have said they would try to cap immigration from the rest of the EU if re-elected.

Both Merkel and the European Commission in Brussels have said this would violate a fundamental EU principle that allows citizens of the bloc to live and work in any member state.

Spiegel cited sources in Berlin saying that if Cameron does insist on limiting the number of immigrants from other EU states, “there will be no going back”.

“Should Cameron persist (in this plan), Chancellor Angela Merkel would abandon her efforts to keep Britain in the EU. With that a point of no return would be reached,” it quoted the sources as saying, adding: “That would be it then.”

The UK already have controlled migration by virtue of it being an island...not part of the Schengen Agreeement. The limit proposed would be a limit to already-controlled migration.

Its still out of control though mate, up until last year we were projected to overtake Germany as the EU's most populous nation.

One in 4 children born in the south of England is to non-British parents.

You only have to read this (quoting the British ONS) to see the issue.

If you are in Germany - you're seeing something probably for the first time here.

That means in 30 years UK population will have increased by 20 million if current trends continue. (i.e. by 25% -33%)

UK population expected to rise by almost 10 million in 25 years
The number of people living in Britain is projected to rise from 64.6 million in mid-2014 to 74.3 million in 2039

The UK population will rise by almost 10 million over the next 25 years, according to official estimates.

The number of people living in the country is projected to rise from 64.6 million in mid-2014 to 74.3 million in 2039. More than two-thirds of the increase will be the result of assumed net migration and the indirect impact of people arriving on the birth rate, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

The ONS said: “About 68% of the projected increase … is either directly attributable to future migration [51% of projected growth], or indirectly attributable to future migration through its effect on births and deaths [17% of projected growth].”

The population will rise by 4.4 million over the next decade and is projected to reach 70 million by mid-2027, it added. England’s population is projected to increase by 7.5% by mid-2024, Northern Ireland’s by 5.3%, and Scotland’s and Wales’ by 3.1%.

The average annual growth rate of 440,000 in the first decade means that the UK population as a whole will rise by more than the number of people currently living in Dorset each year.

there's a massive difference between the population of Germany and the UK, damo...not gonna be caught any time soon, especially as both are increasing at about the same rate.

Yes but we are the second most densely populated country in the EU already.

In order to keep up with housing demand we need to build a town the size of 100,000 every year. Its already putting strains on the country.

Incidentally we have TWICE the population density of Germany. Already.

welcome to the world! It's an issue all over. A Brexit would be able to cap this, of course.

We shouldn't need to Brexit the EU in order to have this control.

Its being enforced/dictated by Germany. To meet Germany's needs.

Britain signed up to it. That's what I meant earlier about Norway & Swiss limiting their obligations as they're under a different 'contract'. And it's why a Brexit is required (if this is your main concern), so the UK can limit its obligations to the EU.

After Brexit, others will wanna follow suit. Could get really interesting.

No Britain did not sign up to a set of rules that could never be changed - if the need arises.

Its Germany dictating to the UK thinking we are Greece. When we aren't.

That point hasn't quite been grasped by Angela Merkel.
