I tend to agree - but the Saudi money has changed the rules of the game. The Saudi league appears to be a first shot at destroying UEFA's control of the club game - in much the same way that the Saudis destroyed the PGA's control of golf. FIFA have their own incentives to wrest control back from UEFA. So, a marriage of convenience between FIFA and the Saudis is very much in play.
FIFA would be delighted to end UEFA's control of the club game. This new FIFA Club World Cup is intended to contribute to that. Add in a mega-rich Saudi league starting to attract players in their prime, and the dominance of European clubs is undermined. With power currently concentrated in Europe, UEFA have complete control of the club game. However, if the Saudi league becomes something akin to Serie A in the 1980s, then only a club World Cup can truly answer the question that the UEFA Champions League currently does: which club is the best on the planet?
It might suit FIFA to partner with the Saudis... The FIFA World Cup is one way to deepen that "partnership." Infantino - a man clearly without scruples - is probably telling himself to "get with the winning team."
