The Moyes Era

Status
Not open for further replies.
Meaningless statement really. Unless you think Moyes is the world's best manager and is also omniscient.

Looking at those transfers, those players are a good few of those on which the 6th, 5th and 5th place finishes were built on. Talk about making the most of what we got.

Citys Net spend :

£48,250,000
£117,000,000
£99,000,000
£117,900,000
£39,120,000

/crys

According to that site our net spend over the last 5 seasons is £800,000. I don't know how true it is but I guess we could roughly work it out if arsed. There's only 5 teams below that and one of them ripped Liverpool off for 35 million

It doesnt matter mate, its very deceptive.

*Jesus looking at that is like an idiots guide of how not to transfers - they have signed some gash!

Based on Liverpool's net spend over the past two seasons they've spent £30m.

Downing - £20m
Henderson - £16m
Carroll - £35m

It doesn't tell the whole story at all, thus using it as some kind of yard stick for managerial success IS deceptive.

Yes, we did very well, but saying nobody could do it better is totally mad, you must realise that. Moyes is a nobody who came from Preston, are you seriously telling me no other manager could buy £27m worth of players (including Kroldrup and Van Der Meyde) to that standard ?

Just because you said net spend is deceptive doesnt mean your right. Im not sure what point your making here really mate.

Just to be pedantic the year we sold Rooney, we signed Cahill and Bent (before we sold Rooney), Beattie in Jan and Arteta on loan (post loosing Graveson), we actually qualified for the CL that year and the squad was weaker then the year before when we stayed up on the lowest points ever at the time. By that bench mark, ever since we got the Rooney money we havnt been as good. Just saying is all.

Beg to differ. We may have lost a great talent in Rooney, but overall the squad improved.

Transfers that season...

Well I'd look at how much we sold them for (Almost £50m)+ the years service we got out of them. That's almost double. All gave or are giving years and years of excellent service backed up by league positions. You find me another manager who's done anything like that, mate and back it up with numbers.

Saying 'find me another manager who has done that' doesn't make sense either, as we all know Moyes is in a unique position. I would struggle to find many managers who have been in a top flight job for 10 years to begin with.

Having said that, Wenger has done the best job transfer wise of any manager i know of. Net spend of £5m since he has been at Arsenal, a figure which has seen them win titles and consistently be around the top 4. Net spend per season of about £300k ?

Although that goes back to my point about net spend being deceptive. When you actually look at the transfers you'll see that Wenger spent millions and millions of pounds for year after year and there have only actually been 5 seasons out of 16 that he has had a negative net spend. Over the last three seasons they have a net spend of -£48m, for example.

1) We sold Rooney for £27m in the summer of 2004, the following season we purchased Lescott, Johnson, Kroldrup, Arteta, Neville, Valente, and Van Der Meyde for a total of £27m.

We sold Joleon Lescott in the summer of 2009 for £22m, the same day we had purchased Bily for £9m, and we then went on to purchase Heitinga for £6m and Distin for £5m.

Good enough ? We also had a positive net spend the year before the Lescott deal, so it's not as if money was saved from a previous transfer window and spent on those three, the money went from Lescott straight into those three. Similar story with Rooney.

2) What has this summer got to do with anything ? We were clearly discussing the period during which we were making a sustained challenge for European places. Good attempt at a deflection though, which is what Moyes lovers like doing.

1) Room for improvement to be honest mate, I do dispute your figures, largely so and your missing out Neville, Beattie, Simon Davies, Ruddy and Ferrari from incomings, your also wrong we didnt sign Lescott or Johnson untill the year after (two seasons post Rooney leaving).

So the summer after we sold Rooney:

Arteta - 2mill
Nev - 3.5Mill
Davies - 3.5mill
Kroldrup- 5mill
AVM - 1.8mill
Valente - 1.5mill
Ruddy - 250k

= 18mill odd! Long way from 27 mill mate, which we didnt get in one go/if at all.

Lescott also had a sell on clause, in addition to Distin. Billy and the Heit. We also got Jo, Donovan, Senderos on loan and Neill for a 1 mill signing on fee.

So now your fully aware of the fact s (if you know your history and what not) - some other points - your discussing the period during which we were competitive for European place - frankly i wasnt aware that we currently arent - im discussing on average how brilliantly our manager has done over his WHOLE tenure on average - not just picking out specific seasons that suit my agenda.

What has this summer got to do anything, ok lets focus on the seasons where we lost the best player in our squad and had some money to have to buy 2-3 repacements being down to our bones and ignore the seasons where we had to sell our best players and didnt get any money to strengthen the team. Are you for real like. How many players have we shed in the past two seasons - but thats prob deceptive.

Me an agenda ? Haha.

I was CLEARLY referring to your statement about 'challenging for CL and europe' hence why i bolded that part of your post, that is why the last three years are irrelevant.

Your figures differ from mine, and no, i didn't miss Neville, you might want to go back and read through my post !

The website i and others have been using had Lescott and Johnson one window too early it would seem, which is unfortunate. Regardless, we still did spend an amount in the seasons which followed that more than amounted to what we received for Rooney.

I'm honestly not sure why you're insistent on bringing up the last few seasons and our poor spending, and then asking me if i am 'for real'. I have never once disputed that we have lost more than we have gained in the last few years, and it's got nothing to do with our past run in the UEFA and one season where we qualified for the Champions league, which is what i was talking about.

But feel free to keep saying 'are you for real' instead of sticking to the relevant parts of Moyes' tenure.

Weren't you holding up Swansea as something we should aspire to the other day? How they were miles ahead of Everton etc.

They're currently 8 points behind. Their season has run out of steam.

More poor judgement from Brennan91.

You need to check your transfer history mate and do your sums, before making wild statements from memory.

Anyway i agree Moyes is ace.

Thats not the only thing he needs to check!

Brennan91 has a history of making assertions that turn out to be utter NONSENSE.

I've got one thing to say to him: AT LEAST WE'RE NOT VILLA !
