I suppose I can live with Moyes on a short term deal but that has to be it, no long term nonsense that would be just more can kicking imo. It would be really interesting to know who TFG long term target is, is it someone that is actually worth waiting around for.

Villa and Palace both had different squad qualities and different financial outlooks. It’s not as though the club could have got Emery and went for Dyche. Moshiri used to go for the biggest name he could get and often got them. But it’s simply the strength of your proposition.

Everton in mid table with Richarlison Mina Digne Bernard Gomes and the promise of 100 mill to bring in players you want gets you Carlo Ancelotti. Everton in 19th with no money a rubbish squad and having sold your best player with more sales on the horizon gets you Sean Dyche. Villa had a blank chequebook and a good squad that had already been assembled under Gerrard by the owners. Completely different scenarios. One we might be in after Moues.
I don’t buy that our squad is of the appalling quality that it has been made to look. I reckon we should be 12-14th or so, all else being equal.

More so than anything, though, we’re in a transfer window with new owners. This is an opportunity to take the first steps towards redressing imbalance and lack of quality in the squad, under a manager who can work with what there is and continue the overhaul over the years and windows to come.

I’m parroting myself now, but it is so disheartening to me, for us to be effectively writing AT LEAST the rest of this season/the Jan window off because of some perceived need to get the holy grail of PL experience in the post to be a safe pair of hands.

If appointed, I understand the rationale, as Moyes will probably get the points needed for us march into BMD as a Prem team.

As fans, we know what to expect, and it will not set the pulses racing.
I am with this, 6 month deal makes sense.

The new owners can get to work on the new manager from when moyes signs the contract, I know they are big fans of the Bournemouth director of football, so maybe their manager as well ?

Having slept on it.

Factoring in our situation of being 16th, and 1-3 points clear of Leicester, Ipswich and Wolves with a game in hand.

Considering the potential PSR headache.

Knowing we can't even go an take the likes of Brentford's manager these days.

Knowing even out of contract managers like Terzić, Mancini, Carsley and even the likes of Southgate wouldn't fancy this squad without some serious recruitment.

Knowing the shortlist isn't going to be appealing because we couldn't get to the summer when it would be.

I'm still desperately disappointed it will be David Moyes.

A lot of fans have spent the season saying this team is a lot better than where it is, so if that's the case, a new manager only has to just not go backwards. Factor in new owners now, a manager that isn't on his way to the gallows and a couple of signings and surely we can do better.

People making out like Moyes is a safe pair of hands, when he joined West Ham in November 2017, he drawn an lost more than he won and West Ham couldn't see the back of him quick enough and he left that summer. When he rejoined them in December 2019, "West Ham finished in 16th place in the Premier League with 39 points, their lowest points tally since 2010–11 when they gained 33 points and finished bottom. Moyes' 19 games in charge produced 20 points, one more than the previous 19 games managed by Manuel Pellegrini" - and Covid saved their arse that season.

He had much a better team win 4 of his last 19 at West Ham, an finish just 4 points above us last season.

He also had a 44% win ratio with West Ham the 2nd time round, which has been better than every manager since Ancelotti (who he finished higher than). West Ham also had the highest points they’ve had in a PL season under Moyes.

There’s no point in a debate over this because you’ve well and truly confirmed your opinion & you won’t budge but if you’re going to bring up his West Ham record I think it’s only fair you do the good bits aswell as where he struggled

We still haven’t exorcised the ghost of Billy liar from the Goodison park boardroom, and he’s possessed Big Dan to get his boy back. No other explanation.

Chongy, call a priest ffs.

@Exeter_Gently

I know you love a bit of Dan so;

''Moyes 6 month deal, Friedkins wants Ashworth as DOF, Ashworth wants Southgate as he did at United which the Friedkins are happy with...

the above from same source who told me yesterday about 2 hours before the news broke''

This guy I do somewhat trust, hope he is wrong, Southgate would be the single most uninspiring thing I could think of going into the new stadium.

i don't really understand why we can't recruit a permanent manager rather than moyes as interim.

my fear with moyes is that he'll do enough to earn a longer contract and we'll end up being stuck with him.

To be fair, I think it makes sense to assess the time at West Ham where he joined mid-season because that's the position in which he's joining us.

If it were me - I'd offer him 6 months with the option to extend it for another 12 should he meet a certain goal (like finishing with over 40 points, for example). I'd also be asking Carsley if he wants to get involved as well.

yeh no way they can give moyes a long-term contract now

Why would he though ? I just can’t imagine why he’d turn down a managers job in the championship and say he’d take a number two role a month later , from a career point of view even basic financial it makes no sense to me .
I don't know mate. Just speculating but maybe he would prefer to be a no.2 somewhere to get a feel for club management before taking a top job somewhere

Oh man I massively misremembered his time at Sunderland. I always thought he joined mid-season. Putting my incredible footy knowledge to the fore as always.
Same here, thought he joined mid-season. But can remember how depressing he was from the moment he joined, and then he just went on to try and buy all the players who had played for him here (Chebes, Pienaar etc)

Not at all, but to paint Moyes as a manager who has only ever done good things is disingenuous. He was brought in to help Sunderland in similar circumstances and took them down. He flopped hard at Sociedad. Even his time here wasn’t all positive.

Last time we were in a similar boat we hired Dyche while one of our relegation rivals from that period hired Emery. Palace hired Glasner when they were in the muck. Universally positive moves? No, but each made a fundamental change in approach and implemented something to build on. We are - again - panicking and going for the old/British/PL experience option.
It's difficult...

Glasner has hardly reinvented palace. They are about where they usually are and are always in the mix for relegation. He wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes at Everton, especially after his start this season.

Emery is a top manager. He struggled at arsenal, but has been pretty consistently good since leaving them. Not sure what he'd do with a limited squad and limited funds, though.

We are still paying the price for our psr issues. Even with new owners, the general consensus is that clubs don't spend tonnes of money after building a new stadium. That leaves you with "steady hands" that are going to keep you in the league without doing anything spectacular. If that isn't the dictionary definition of David Moyes, I don't know what else is?
