Market value is just what a buyer is prepared to pay for the commodity, or what a seller demands in order to part from it. If we managed to sell Hibbert for 50 mil, in that transaction his market value would be 50 mil. The next day however, market value would again be whatever somebody offers or what his employers deem he is worth to them.

Southampton just spent £15 million on Pablo Osvaldo (scored a penalty in the shooutout with Fiorentina in 2008 if I remember correctly)

We aren't just getting outspent a little by clubs around us, we are getting outspent a lot by clubs way below us. There is no way we can compete with these finances forever. Southampton have spent £35 million. We have spent around £6 million

They have to spend to survive. Their wage bill will currently be miniscule compared to ours, plus their income has now massively increased proportionally compared to last year.

That's like saying Shell can sell their petrol for 300p per litre because they think that's what it's worth and they own it. It's ludicrous. Market forces dictate the value of any product.

That analogy is not relevant as Shell are looking to sell their fuel & it has direct competitors selling exactly the same commodity.

You can value your commodity at whatever you see fit, the market then chooses whether it'll pay the asking price.

If you aren't advertising your item & someone comes along wanting to buy it, when you're not looking to sell, then only a price that exceeds the intrinsic value is likely to tempt you to part with it.

McCarthy's current market value has not been set, as no-one has put their money up for him.

Fellaini's market value - today - stands at £16m, as that's what the 'market' currently has him at, as there's only 1 bid on the table.

That doesn't mean he'll be sold for that, as the selling clubs valuation is obviously much higher, but as of this minute, that's his market value, as that's all the market has come forward with.

Nope, but you know very well that's untrue. By that logic, I could phone up Barcelona, bid a quid for Messi and that becomes his market value.

Of course it's true, the market price is dictated by the market, you only find out what that is, when the market is exposed to the product, anything before that is just subjective opinion / guesswork / attempts at benchmarking.

International Valuation Standards defines market value as "the estimated amount for which a property should exchange on the date of valuation between a willing buyer and a willing seller in an arm’s-length transaction after proper marketing wherein the parties had each acted knowledgeably, prudently, and without compulsion."[1]

That´s us done for then.

Your fault is comparing a traditional market to a commodity market. Football is different, the whole process is about benchmarking.

Fellaini is not valued at 16m by the football community (see Owens Twitter feed etc.) because he's considered a far more valuable commodity. McCarthy for 10m is far closer to what people would generally consider fair for that commodity.

No it's not... Ask any football fan whether 16m is fair for Fellaini and you'll get a lot saying no. Ask whether 10m for McCarthy is fair and you'll get a far more even reaction.

Is that how fee's are worked out then mate ?? A fan Survey ??

Negative fans towards McCarthy will say an Irish midfielder at a relegated club, should be cheap!!

Or you could say, FA Cup winning 22 year old, Clubs best player, who will drag them back to the prem. This player is worth alot.

Yes, pretty much. That's why Bale is valued generally at 80m plus and Hibbert isn't.

Stats, age, marketing value, value to club, league, media exposure etc. etc. All more pertinent factors to a fair bid than what Dave Whelan thinks is fair.

Dave Whelan, the Wigan chairman ??? The man who pays McCarthys wage.....thats Dave Whelan ??

So, back to Fellaini. When he had a 23 mill clause, and nobody bid it, what was he worth ??

So Man Utd are going to keep dipping their line in the water with more bait each time hoping we'll bite - and this will happen over the next 2 weeks unsettling both players. The bid will get to a reasonable level around the time the window closes and we'll accept it but won't have time to spend it. I can see it all unfolding now.
