Thinking of going to Japan in September for up to a month. It's one of those "do it now or you'll never get to do it again" kinda things. I'm going solo and trying to keep the costs down by staying in hostels.

Any must see places?

Always wanted to go to Japan and will one day now that my daughter lives in Oz.

If you like theme parks, Tokyo DisneySea is supposed to be the best in the world in terms of immersive, attention to detail of the theming.

Going on a cruise to the Norwegian fjords next week. It's something I've always wanted to do.

New Orleans during the French Quarter Festival was pretty special.

Did the fjords over Easter this year and really enjoyed it. Though it felt between seasons, the snow was mostly melted but not enough to make the waterfalls impressive. I'd really like to go back in the summer months as on our last day there we went to Eidfjord and could see everything just starting to turn green and I bet it's stunning. I'd recommend getting off the boat when you can, though Norway itself is mega expensive, I only truly appreciated the size of the fjords when I saw the ship set against them.

We're going on a couple of excursions. One is the train but the other one I'm not sure of. The rest of the time - like Bergen - we'll just have a look around on our own

Interesting experience in Johannesburg on Tuesday....attempted robbery by bogus police on the way to O.R. Tambo Airport.
Theee of us in an Uber mini cab, flashed and pulled over on the hard shoulder. Three fellas went though our bags after checking if we had a gun in the dash and under the seats. Said they were investigating forged money. Went on for around 10 mins - realised what was going on when they were hassling to see watches...fortunately we travel light there. By pure luck a real police car pulled up 100yds down the hard shoulder to speak to a woman motorist about something. The robbers shat a brick and thought the blue lights were for them, jumped out of the van, into their motor and rammed through traffic to get away.
Police believe the Uber driver was in on the gig and had notified them when we got in. They said we were extremely lucky as they carry guns and use them if there's resistance. Was only when we got in the airport and Googled 'Johannesburg Uber incidents' that we realised the potential gravity of it.

Scary in hindsight, but not enough to put me of Johannesburg or SA....such a fantastic country. The Mrs isn't happy about me going back now but at the end of the day it's a part of my job and could have happened anywhere.

Been to SA before (~15 years ago), and was warned then not to go to JoBurg as it was dangerous. Sounds like not much has changed.

Spent the day there today mate.

Even though the surfing was a bit " flat " it's a great beach and very child friendly due to the bay being so shallow.

Passed another sign post for another nearby beach - Trevone ?
Sorry mate. Not been ignoring you. Let's just say I've had an enforced absence from the site.

Trevone is just another family beach mate. No surfing there, although some of the weather we've been having the last 7 days you could probably have surfed at Ainsdale.:)

To be fair I go every three months and always been fine.... this Uber to the airport scam is quite rife currently. However, I love the place and it won't deter me from going.

Yeah, I travel through J'burg on occasion on the way to Madagascar (it is very easy to get into Madagascar via SA versus Paris or Istanbul). Horrible city, in my opinion.

Rhodes for 9 nights from the 8th August. Never been before but looks nice.

What's Cuba like for kids? Planning on going with the wife and 3 kids next year but not sure of the is a lot for them to do.

There's kids clubs in the hotels I'm pretty sure mate, not a lot to do outside the hotels (although Varadero at least has some stuff) but the country and people are fantastic. Go for it, while it's still how it is and make sure you get to Havana at least for a day.
