Interesting experience in Johannesburg on Tuesday....attempted robbery by bogus police on the way to O.R. Tambo Airport.
Theee of us in an Uber mini cab, flashed and pulled over on the hard shoulder. Three fellas went though our bags after checking if we had a gun in the dash and under the seats. Said they were investigating forged money. Went on for around 10 mins - realised what was going on when they were hassling to see watches...fortunately we travel light there. By pure luck a real police car pulled up 100yds down the hard shoulder to speak to a woman motorist about something. The robbers shat a brick and thought the blue lights were for them, jumped out of the van, into their motor and rammed through traffic to get away.
Police believe the Uber driver was in on the gig and had notified them when we got in. They said we were extremely lucky as they carry guns and use them if there's resistance. Was only when we got in the airport and Googled 'Johannesburg Uber incidents' that we realised the potential gravity of it.

Scary in hindsight, but not enough to put me of Johannesburg or SA....such a fantastic country. The Mrs isn't happy about me going back now but at the end of the day it's a part of my job and could have happened anywhere.

It probably wouldn't happen in England. I'm 54 and have never been mugged, stabbed, burgled or car-jacked but keep believing that Jo'burg is as safe as most places if it helps.

I'm a huge lover of anything to do with travelling and experiencing other countries. Part of my job enables me to travel which is a huge bonus for me. Yeah. Decent enough city, but take plenty of money, it's expensive. We did a Nordic Noir tour as we're fans of The Killing, Borgen and The Bridge and took the train over the Oresunds bridge to Malmo for a day trip. Nyhavn, Rundturne, Radhus, Christiania, canal tour were all pretty good to see/do, Little Mermaid was a bit meh! Tivoli Gardens will probably be closed, but check dates and times.
 
Off to the isle of Arran on Friday for a week, hope the weather picks. up, never been so hopefully can have a decent walk around the place.
Don't mind a bit of rain so long as it's not all bloody week.
Bringing a few books decent bottle of vodka just incase

Beautiful island mate, loads to do in Broddick and Lamlash, visit the brewery and distillery.

I've experienced worse in parts of Europe, especially Bulgaria and the Balkans region to be fair.

Think we are staying in Lamlash hired a house for the week.
Girlfriend has organised it for my birthday treat , so not to sure, going to do a bit of walking , if weather is ok might do a few boat trips.
