We'll be in Liverpool for few days next Summer and I'm checking out hotels in the no more than 90 pounds a double range.

Parking seems to be a problem so I was thinking of finding a hotel close to the ferry around Wallasey. What do you think?

We could either get the ferry there and back or drive through the tunnel and drive around Liverpool. Will Vauxhall Rd be hard to use what with
all the docks development going on? I hope!

I was looking at The Lord Nelson in town and it looks OK, but there's the parking issue.

I was even thinking of staying somewhere out of town like Chester and driving in every day. What do you think?

I'd be grateful for any suggestions. I'm in Melbourne and it's bedtime so I'll check for any post in the morning.

I did the Thomas Cooke ticket and hotel package and stayed at the Indigo in chapel st. fits the under GBP90 thing, handy for everywhere. excellent cooked breakfast.
Swerve Chester the commute will eat your day up.
City centre car parking is as always at a premium, but the hotel has spaces you can use in the car park round the corner.

Most of the places around the docks to the south of the centre have parking facilities (pay) which will probably be cheaper and definitely more convenient than getting in and out. As mentioned above, Premier Inn and also check Hampton by Hilton (nice) and Jury's Inn. There is an Ibis in that area which is a step down from those (probably the worst Ibis I've stayed in) . The Campanile, which I think used to be next door, was definitely iffy budget hotel the last time I tried it, but I think they have moved to a new building on the docks.

Hi Jeff, although the Travelodge at New Brighton is basic, it is good value for where it is and certainly fits the bill. Its about a 2 mile comfortable walk along the prom to Seacombe /Wallasey ferry and a 5 minute walk to the railway station where there are direct trains every 20 minutes to Liverpool.
The hotel is surrounded by modern bars and restaurants, there is a multiplex cinema within the same building and there's a theatre nearby. They advertise a parking fee but it has now been withdrawn, the car park is attached and covered by cameras.
I have stayed there many times with the family and have always enjoyed my stay there.

Thanks for your responses. At the moment I'm leaning towards the Mercure Atlantic, but I haven't sacked the New Brighton thing.

It's a bit more than we want to pay - there's four of us - but it includes breakfast. The blurb says it has parking for three quid, but if it
was full I don't know if everyone would get a spot and I checked a parking place nearby and it's 24 pounds overnight.

One other thing - are the stadium tours on in the Summer? I've checked online but I'm not finding a definite yes or no. It seems be no.

My brother-in-law wants to do the Anfield thing, not me, but we'd go to both if they were on. Thanks again and I'll probably have more
questions later.

Just booked to see Roger Waters in Sofia, Bulgaria next May, only £40 return flights and £40 gig tickets compared to the £100 he's charging for the UK gigs, anyone been there?

Off to New Zealand for 3 weeks next August, any recommendations/must see?

Hi mate. If you enjoy skiing / all things winter-sports related, then given the time of year you're going you'll enjoy Queenstown / Wanaka in the south, beautiful part of the country. For a couple of small hidden gems, Kaiteriteri (near Nelson) is a great spot, lovely beaches (though you're not exactly travelling at a prime beach time of year of course!!!). In the north island I always recommend Tongariro National Park, amazing landscapes, and if you're an active type and you enjoy walking, the Tongariro crossing is one of the best single-day treks anywhere in the world, stunning scenery (my wife and I did it over summer, am sure it would be equally stunning in winter, however you'll need to take the usual precautions re the winter - it is an alpine trek after all). For something a bit more relaxed - my old hometown province Hawkes Bay has loads of beautiful wineries and restaurants where you can take wine tours. Rotorua, also in the North Island, is a ubiquitous tourist trap but has quite a few touristy things to do. Mt. Maunganui, the Coromandel has great beaches too, and being in the upper north island the weather is still reasonable even in winter (though the seawater will still be on the cold side!).

Hope that helps mate ;)

Thanks mate, but I gave up on the city centre because of the parking and I've booked the Penny Lane Hotel. It's not far from where I used to live
and I'm happy to get around on the bus.

Btw, I don't suppose there are bus conductors now, so how do you pay your fare these days? Last time I caught a bus was from near Queens Square to Goodison in 2006 and I forget how I got me ticket.

And thanks to all of you who've helped me with this.

Copenhagen next month. Any shouts?
Take lots of money, paid as much as £15 for a pint.
Tivoli gardens, if open.
Round tower.
River cruise.
Day trip across the Oresunds bridge to Malmo.
Look for one of the many buffet joints, cheaper than most eating places.
Hot dog wrapped in bacon.
