Spent a week in Rethymnon in Crete last month. Amazing place I would highly recommend if you prefer more of a traditional town than a 'resort'. It still had a beach with lots of bars/restaurants along the front with a fantastic Venetian old town. I didn't meet one British tourist the whole time I was there either

Off to Cologne in Jan, got return flights for £20. Love Germany but have never been to the west. Looking forward to it.

Hi mate. If you enjoy skiing / all things winter-sports related, then given the time of year you're going you'll enjoy Queenstown / Wanaka in the south, beautiful part of the country. For a couple of small hidden gems, Kaiteriteri (near Nelson) is a great spot, lovely beaches (though you're not exactly travelling at a prime beach time of year of course!!!). In the north island I always recommend Tongariro National Park, amazing landscapes, and if you're an active type and you enjoy walking, the Tongariro crossing is one of the best single-day treks anywhere in the world, stunning scenery (my wife and I did it over summer, am sure it would be equally stunning in winter, however you'll need to take the usual precautions re the winter - it is an alpine trek after all). For something a bit more relaxed - my old hometown province Hawkes Bay has loads of beautiful wineries and restaurants where you can take wine tours. Rotorua, also in the North Island, is a ubiquitous tourist trap but has quite a few touristy things to do. Mt. Maunganui, the Coromandel has great beaches too, and being in the upper north island the weather is still reasonable even in winter (though the seawater will still be on the cold side!).

Hope that helps mate ;)

Thanks mate, really useful!

Thanks mate, but I gave up on the city centre because of the parking and I've booked the Penny Lane Hotel. It's not far from where I used to live
and I'm happy to get around on the bus.

Btw, I don't suppose there are bus conductors now, so how do you pay your fare these days? Last time I caught a bus was from near Queens Square to Goodison in 2006 and I forget how I got me ticket.

And thanks to all of you who've helped me with this.
pay the driver lad;)

I really like Washington, I’m always taken back by how friendly Americans are to us Brits.

Friendly Yank :“ hey, how are you? “
Me “ WHY ARE YOU ASKING?????????????!!!!!”

Going to Budapest in the morning , 9th excursion of the year , hard work this retirement lark.
Booked Fuerteventura in November. First time on that island.
Not a fan of the Canaries if I'm honest. Gran Canaria awful, Tenerife full of spivs and wide boys, Lanzarote bearable on the couple of times I've been there.
So, here's hoping for a decent time in 50 days according to the TUI countdown clock.
Semi retirement has its advantages too.

Anyone been to Atlantic City?

looking at there or Vegas next Sept/Oct.

I can't fly those distances in cattle so needs to be virgin premium economy or BA business. Seems to be huge price differences, basically a few days spends in either resort difference so I suppose what I'm asking is, is vegas loads better than Atlantic city?
Vegas is by far the better city
Great choice of hotels depending who you are travelling with
I’ve been 8 Times , from 2 nights to 10 nights.
Expensive but so much to do
Make sure you visit the Grand Canyon and Hoover dam.
Only been to Atlantic City once
Poor mans Vegas.
