Off to Riga (Latvia) in mid December for 5 nights. Anyone been?

I love travelling but haven't got the money to travel the world so I set myself a target of visiting every European capital last year. Been to London, Rome, Budapest, Prague so far and got Riga in December. Not really a fan of doing the quick visit on a train thing that has became quite popular, I prefer to spend a decent amount of time in each city.

Budapest is probably my favourite place out of them all. I went in Late January last year, freezing like but it adds to the experience for me. Found it mad how peaceful it was past about 7pm in all the main areas even on a weekend. Such a difference to a big city in other European city's.

It's a brilliant idea that mate but there's some countries especially in Europe where the best places to go and see in that country aren't in the capital. For example I'd rather go to Innsbruck than Vienna if I were to go to Austria. Just a recommendation to not always go to the capital.

Yo, when was this exactly mate?

I rarely visit our capital. Once a year maybe, max two.

Would have been fun to see and have few
I went to Helsinki last year and absolutely loved it, will defo go back. Went on the ferry to this little island fort thing that was great, and them 1l cans of beer you can buy are the one.
Super expensive, mind, me and my bird spent a fortune over the 4 days.

Nice to hear that you guys liked your stay

True that mate. It is something that I've thought about. I think in the future I'm going to start spending longer in a country and try to split my time between different cities as its the only way to see a true reflection of a country!

Yeah that's definitely the best way to do it, rather than going for brief period but going to lots of different countries, you'd be better going for less holidays but for longer and having a better quality holiday.

I'm currently in Riga, and also had Saturday night here before getting the coach up to Vilnius for the past couple of nights around the England game. Off to Latvia v Kazskhstan later tonight.

This is my 2nd trip here and I'm enjoying this one better than when last here in 2007. I reckon it's better this time of year without the stag whoppers. All the local birds are wearing FMBs which just tops it all off.

I must have taken 200 photos thus far, as it's a very photogenic city. There's a little art nouveau district to the north/east of the small castle - worth q stroll.

That said, I prefer Vilnius. Again, it was our 2nd visit there but it's really grown on me this time. I love the old town there, and the views from atop the castle and Hill of Crosses are stunning.

Going to Prague at the start of November. Any tips? Besides usual -places to visit, things to do-, would also like to get a party-club recommendation from someone younger, if possible. Will be there for 5 days.

Aside from the obvious bits, shooting AK-47s and Saigas in a random concrete tunnel was definitely an experience!

Off to Poland on Saturday week, not even gone yet and already in early stages of planning my next trip. As me and my girlfriend absolutely loved Croatia so much in June, we're planning on going Eastern Europe again but this time to Montenegro and Bosnia. Ryanair to well cheap flights from Stanstead to Podgorica, from there we're going to travel down to Budva. Spend a few nights there before moving to Kotor for a while before finally moving onto Mostar in Bosnia. All three look like beautiful cities. Mostar especially. Depending on the prices for accommodation, we're considering maybe going to Albania aswell as i've heard good things.

Anyone been to any of them?

Been to all of them. They are all lovely. Podgorica is more of a modern city, while Mostar is a really, really beautiful city (especially the very popular bridge). I would definitely visit Sarajevo if I was on your place, the amount of tradition that city has, especially the very popular Bascarsija, is amazing. You've got to try some food specialities there, aswell. Budva and Kotor are pretty much same like Dubrovnik, but if you've never been there - it's just full of really interesting history, buildings and I am sure you'll enjoy it. Have fun visiting our Balkans! :D
