The walking / hiking thread

Have you thought of getting them re soled - I’ve had my Zamberlans done 3 times over the years.

Yeah, unfortunately they're from a line you can't resole. The majority of the ones you can also tend to have full leather uppers/tongue/collar etc and I don't usually buy those as it's just too damn hot here 90% of the time, even in Jan, so I'm always in something that's a canvas/nubuck combo. I'm sure I could probably find something if I put the effort in, which I haven't done with probably the last 2 pairs.

I may just bite the bullet and get poles to take some weight off my feet too, which should get me some more sole life. I took a good dive in Utah on a sloped hunk of solidified, decomposed granite (the kind that looks solid but the top layer will just crumble off if you're on any kind of angle) and I couldn't save myself like I used to do. It's either that or tone it down, which I don't see happening...too many trails that you need to put the work in for to reach the best stuff, especially in the SouthWest US. Problem is the poles will probably make me even more careless, since I'll have more leverage...lol

Fck it, paramotoring time...nothing bad can happen there when you still act like you're 22.

Anyone into wild camping? (Not Bear Grylls style, just setting up a tent in the middle of nowhere!) Done a bit in Scotland and the Lakes but was looking for some suggestions a bit closer to home? (Exiled scouser living in Warrington!)

Yeah - done it loads in Snowdonia. Mainly up on the Carneddau as the farmers don't go up there often. Also there's a cool spot on Moel Siabod on a plateau overlooking a small lake.

Depends what you mean by wild camping ?

I`ve fly camped loads, around Cheshire and Shropshire.

Unless you have permission of the land owner ( good luck with that ) it`s illegal.

We always made sure that we were tucked away out of sight, usually in the middle of a wood somewhere and never lit fires ( magnet for any game keepers )

Invariably you sometimes get caught, but as long as your camp is clean and tidy, you can normally blag your way out of it.

The only time we got ever got any serious grief was one time in Anglesey, by Newborough Warren, when a very very angry farmer caught a gang of us camping in woods on his land - sheer weight of numbers managed to convince him, that tackling half a dozen lads wasn`t a very good idea lol

Two of my mates tried to set up camp outside Trawsfynydd nuclear power station, too much wacky baccy when they’d been fishing, I wouldn’t recommend that.

You want a pair of these - Adidas Terrex.

I’d always walked in conventional walking boots ( Zamberlan ) until my mate put me onto these.

Super light, instantly comfy, grippy and the GTX are waterproof.

One of the best bits of kit I’ve ever bought.
I got a pair of these from the Adidas outlet in Stockport, I'd been waiting for Black to go in a sale for absolutely ages as the goretex are £140.

Came out of there with a pair of those exact boots & also the shoe version for £30 each.

Working on the Colorado Trail - 489 miles from Denver to Durango. I'm doing segments of it when I can, it will take probably 2-3 years for me to find the time to do it all. So far, over the last year, I've done 4 segments for about 70 miles total. Three have been nice summer hikes with a few backpacking overnights thrown in. The fourth was a great spring snow shoe hike. Doing another segment in a few weeks - 14 miles with sparse tree cover due to forest fire a few years ago, so my son and I will do it as a full moon hike - night of July 23rd, should(?) be fun(?). Then a 32 mile segment in early September, taking it slow will make it a nice 3 day/2 night outing, ending in Breckenridge, CO, where my better half will be waiting to treat me to dinner after a nice hot shower.

For those of you who are map-afflicted/addicted:

Depends on what you want to see...last summer when I was in Colorado you could clearly make out the outline of the Milky Way with your naked eye, I shyt you not. I think it was around 1AM. You can also spot satellites passing by if you keep your gaze in one spot.

Granted, I think we were around 10-12k feet and it was in the 30's overnight, in late June...but the view was worth it; not going to see that with a full moon out. All I know is we were somewhere off the 145, probably around Rico...not a whole lot of dispersed camping there. I won't do designated/pay sites unless there's no other option...I go out to get AWAY from people FFS; actually got lucky taking a side road about an hour before sundown, we thought we were going to have to sleep in the truck on the side of the road.

Good times.

We're doing the full moon so we can follow the trail without having to resort to headlamps (or at least minimize their use). Hiking this particular segment at night because it can get blazing hot in the sun during the day and has little available water,so we carry what we need for the full route.

Love getting away from the light pollution and up in altitude, sounds like a great time you had.

This last trip was the first time CO kinda' failed me/us...was during the COVID boom so finding a spot was a joke as everyone had flipped out and left their towns or had been laid off and were doing whatever. Ran in to a kayaker who'd been out of work for 3 months, so he just took off to the woods. Can't blame him...but it sucked. Spent more time trying to find camp spots than enjoying what we came to do. We like to pick up and move frequently to check out new areas, which wasn't the best way. We spent 4 of the last 5 days (17 total) up on Grand Mesa just because we couldn't hack trying to move again.

I'll be back, though...possibly September actually. Can't keep me away for long...

it's also partially been a 20+ year retirement home search. This last trip was to check around Basalt/Frying Pan River/Ruedi Resevoir but prices are just too off the charts so, in the immortal words of Garth Algar...
