Titanic Tourist Submarine Goes Missing

It doesn't even have a beacon that pings when it surfaces. Safety is the enemy of innovation, remember!
I'm surprised that it doesn't have such a beacon (EPIRB - Emergency Position Indication Radio Beacon). All ships are mandated to carry at least one. When activated it sends a signal via satellite allowing the position of the ship to be pinpointed.

I haven't really been following the story too closely, but as someone who works in the offshore survey industry, I have two questions that I haven't seen discussed anywhere. 1. why wasn't the submersible tethered to the launch vessel, and 2. why wasn't there a USBL beacon (plus a backup) attached? Has anyone seen answers to these?
Because the CEO and founder is a bellend. Basically. May be slightly more to it, but he claimed that adhering to modern safety standard was prohibiting innovation and thus went ahead with his venture without any safety certifications, etc. Also the reason why all those on board were required to sign a waiver to waive any responsibility of the company for injuries or deaths that may occur should something go wrong.

As @GoldenToffee points out, this is not a serious company. This is an ocean-going version of Space X, dodging regulations to keep costs down and retain the ability to do whatever they want.

Cheers Lobst'. Actually, with your username I'd attach a lot of credibility to your views on this particular one. I bet they saw a lot of Lobster Johnsons while descending to the depths of the Titanic!

Same with me. I don’t get the way some people seem to be taking joy from this.

However, if there were ever a good argument for why billionaires need to be paying more taxes, surely it’s this whole episode. There are people in the countries tasked with the search and rescue who are literally starving, yet now taxpayer resources are being allocated to look for a bunch of guys who had such obscene wealth, that for their leisure activities though, “I’ll just head down to the Titanic and have a look around.”

Not saying they should have been left to their fate, just that maybe nobody really needs to accumulate so much wealth in the first place that they’re spending their holidays diving to the ocean floor or rocketing into space.

They were egregiously stupid to have embarked on the thing, absolutely no argument from me there.

Yeah I've just watched the vids that @LinekersLegs shared back on page 23, sounds like there was a staggering level of cowboyery going on. It's very true what was said in those videos, it appears there was way less safety / fail-safeing implemented in this Titan sub than there is in even industry standard unmanned ROVs.

lets turn it into a rip thread

Bagsy first

Rip the famous 5 you showed us all what not to do if we get rich
